I have two Stokes branches in my family tree and I do not know much about either of them so I'm looking for a little help;
1st is Joseph Stokes who married a Mary Barterham and had a daughter named Elizabeth Stokes born abt. 1814, Dudley, Worchesrer.
she married a Joseph Brooks 1834
2nd is Charlotte Stokes born abt 1769, Nottingham. She married a Thomas Winfield Kempsom 1802 in Kingston Apon Soar.
Any info on both trees, ancesters, siblings, parents ect would be helpful
Hi there,
There are quite a number of threads at Rootschat that have involved searches for KEMPSON, and revolve around Thomas Kempson and Charlotte Stokes and their descendants, particularly a likely son who migrated to South Australia, leaving behind his wife and their Notts born son. That son’s name was Thomas Winfield KEMPSON. That Thomas Winfield Kempson ‘s parents were Henry Kempson and his wife, Jane nee Winfield. That Henry seems to be a son of Thomas Kempson and his wife Charlotte, nee Stokes.
So, as far as I see, Charlotte Stokes husband was not Thomas Winfield Kempson, but simply Thomas Kempson. Charlotte Stokes married Thomas Kempson 03 Jun 1802 at Kingston On Soar,Nottingham,England. Their children included a son, Henry Kempson. That Henry Kempson married Jane Winfield, 13 Jan 1836 at Notts, this was the first marriage for both Henry and Jane. Their son was Thomas Winfield Kempson, born in 1838, and whose birth was registered in the last three months of 1838. He was baptised on 03 Dec 1838 at Ruddington, Notts.
That Thomas Winfield Kempson and his mother did NOT migrate to South Australia, but they stayed in England. Jane did not ever re-marry, and from various UK census records, she is found nearby to her family, with her father becoming a registrar for births, deaths. Her son (Thomas Winfield Kempson) as an adult, taking over from her father as the registrar. Jane died in 1891 in Notts, and Thomas Winfield Kempson died in 1898 in Notts.
I have not found any formal termination for Jane’s marriage to Henry Kempson, but Henry married several more times, after arriving in Australia on the ship Rajasthan departing London 27 Oct 1839, to South Australia arriving 6 Feb 1840. There are Australian births for Henry’s subsequent marriages.
Henry died in New Zealand in 1906, and is buried with his wife from his 1875 New Zealand marriage.
May I again suggest that you seek to contact the RChatter, Martin Harmer. Here are some of his threads regarding Thomas, Charlotte, Henry Kempson and descendants...Alternatively perhaps you could contact sevendays, another RChatter with information about Charlotte Stokes. You can contact any RChatter via the PM service, at the click of the button under their name on threads that they have posted on.

May I please ask the following questions ...

Is any of this information of help to you?

What BDM certificates do you currently hold that give you confidence that you are connected to either Elizabeth Stokes or to Charlotte Stokes?
Cheers, JM
