Death look up for Rasmussen-New York City
« on: Monday 12 September 11 05:38 BST (UK) »
My step-Uncle Anker Theodore Rasmussen immigrated from Storring Denmark in 1888.   Various documents list his date of birth on 11 April- from 1882 to 1884.
 The last document(RegistrationCard) 27 Apr.1942 says last residence 360 East 72 St.NY.
He was self employed in Wholesale stamp business, licence registration #442238
Place of employment or business- Licence Emergency Revenue Div.,50 Lafayette St. NY
M241033- don't know what this # is. He listed as 60 yrs of age.Born Aarhus Denmark.
. His mother & both older brothers died before 1907. His father died 1918 in Ontario, Canada. His step mother also died abt 1837..in Ontario. His step brothers died 1918 & 1953. After 1918, contact was lost.  I have been searching for the following info for many years-- his date of death, cause of death(for family information) and where he is buried.
Please help if you can.  Thank you very much.    ankerpep_52

Thank you for checking-Do you know if a library near his residence, 360E 72nd St would be able to ck the next years up to 1950 to see if he still living there or by checking under his name, at which date he no longer appears residing there or St.any place in NY-This would give me an idea of when he  died, & which borough?
Also some way of checking his self employment @ 50 Lafayette St.???  Do you have any other suggestions that I may follow up on?  Not able to get to NY.

There is a 1946 Manhattan telephone book here:  http://www.evendon.net/PGHLookups/Manhattan1946M.htm   He does not appear to be listed.

Maybe someone else would know for sure, but I doubt a New York City library would do that sort of research without payment.

Thank you Shelly for checking.  In 1942 he had no contact number or a person,so he also may not have had a phone.
Do you know if there is any way to get information on his self employment of stamp business
in the Revenue Division? If self employed he must have paid taxes. Perhaps on a voters list,  home owners list as his father Soren Rasmussen owned property in New York.and may have left one to him.  Was there city directories that could be checked at the libraries from 1942 & onward?   Any suggestions at all?.  Calling libraries & businesses are painful when you get stuck on press 1, press 2 etc. etc. then get cut off.

Thanks again  Janet

Do you have access to Ancestry.com for the US?  I just checked and there is quite a bit of info on there (but no death info that I can see), but it looks like he is registered for the draft board for WWII in 1942 and resided in NYC.  The only problem is... I am not able to see the actual record!  And I don't know why I am having problems with this.  You need to go to your library where you can access ancestry.com and just type in his name, year born, and where born, in the search area, and see what comes up.  I will have to get back to you.   Kathleen

You may not be reading that WWII draft card properly.  I think that the Emergency Revenue Division was/is part of the NYC Department of Finance, and the comment of "License" before it may just mean that he is legally licensed by the department- with the license number being M241033.  That 50 Lafayette Street is likely his business address (storefront/office?), as I doubt the person who filled out the form would have felt it necessary to add the address of the government licensing administration.  That other coding seems to involve something called an Alien Registration Number (4422387).  I do not know much about these myself, but a quick online search suggests that there were forms that were filled out at the time and that these forms are archived on microfilm somewhere.

As Anker does not show up in the online NYC deaths database that runs through 1948, it is likely that he died after this time (though not definite as the database is missing records and contains some inaccurate transcriptions).  If you really want the death record, then you can read up on ordering them from the NYC Department of Health's website, but they are going to hit you with a charge for each year you want searched (assuming you even meet their criteria for releasing the records and their payment requirements).  They likely won't give you the cause of death regardless.  The certificate will note the place of burial though, as well as the burial date.  You can then contact the cemetery with this information if you want to find his actual grave location.

The draft registration card is where the information discussed in the first post was found.  Many of them are also available for free at www.familysearch.org.
