Hawkins, Colchester
« on: Saturday 08 October 11 13:14 BST (UK) »
Returning to the fray and trying to find more about my Hawkins ancestors.
I have census problems.
I have the family in the 1881 and in the 1891 census. My Great-grandfather George and his wife Eliza and a heap of children, including my grandfather William.
I cannot find William again for a long time, until he re-appears in Colchester in August 1911 when he marries Florence Pritchard.
I have done a general census search for each family member and I found Willliam's mother and 2 of his brothers in 1911, but none of the others.
I want to find where William was. Can anyone advise me on more places to look please.

Hi

He may have been serving in the military in 1901 in which case it is less likely you will find him on the 1901 census given that country was at war - Boer War 1899-1902.

Ta. I did have a gander at the Boer War records, but couldn't find a match.
Would he have shown on the census if he was in prison?

No I live south of Bristol and that complicates matters. I have quite a few Hawkins's who've cropped up on census returns and tying them all together is a nightmare. ::)
