HANCK or HAUCK ? Cumberland.
« on: Friday 07 October 11 10:47 BST (UK) »

I have a place of birth on 1851 Census of either HANCK or HAUCK.

it has been transcribed on a publication at CRO in Cumbria as HAUCK & in a another source as HANCK.

Looking at the original 1851 Census it could be either. I have searched Google, Google earth & a good quality Ordance Survey Road Atlas 2001 Britain and nothing close to the above.

Possibility this could be in the Carlisle area.

Any ideas .

Can you provide the 1851 census reference, and any further sightings of this person-of-interest?

Hi Pauline

Person of interest is Sarah Cockbain.

References
Page 2437, folio 259, Page number 4
Reg. District Whitehaven, Sub-District St Bees  -Bank End
George Cockbain 52 Head , Sarah Cockbain (nee Dalton) age 52  Born, HAUCK Cumberland

Married  17/8/1819 St James Whitehaven

Thanks for the old maps, I had a look and nothing like what is actually written on the original Census.

Unless it's a fer-net-ick spelling of Hawk ?
Was there a Hawk Hill in that old-maps list? Another place to try if nothing else.

is it possible that she wasn't born in cumberland at all?  Could it be Hawick in Scotland, which would pronounced like Hauck and cumberland was just a mistake.

It's been added later hasn't it?

All of the other "dittos" are written Do but this one is do.

She is shown as 'born in county' (Cumberland) in the 1841 census.

It probably says "Stanok" or "Stanox" (a Sarah Dalton was born in Stanwix in 1792). This enumerator's handwriting was atrocious. The children were born around Whitehaven/Greenbank, but it barely looks like Whitehaven.

Hi  :)

I haven't seen the original, but could it be Hawick St, not far from Stanwix Bank?  I've seen a few entries where only the street name is given - ie Hawick instead of Hawick Street.

Best wishes
