Mary Anne "Annie" Anderton of Middleton-Cheney
« on: Friday 07 October 11 06:22 BST (UK) »
Mary Anne "Annie" Anderton christened 18 Jan 1820 in Middleton-Cheney, Northamptonshire. Born to William and Elizabeth Anderton, Annie and family arrived in New York on 24 May 1841 and soon settled in Newtown, Queens, New York. Annie married George Edward Pewtner, Jr. born in Portsmouth, Hampshire and was first a husband to Jemima Morris. To her husband she bore George Edward III, William?, Matilda and Annie Elizabeth. George and Annie died in 1852.

Elizabeth bore to William 12 known children thus far: William, Thomas, Joseph, Charles, Mary Anne, David, Joseph, Barbara, Harriet, Matilda, Barbara and Elizabeth. Joseph to the youngest Elizabeth were christened in Middleton-Cheney.  Now to the unknowns, the eldest William and Thomas I have not found in christening records yet. They arrived together in New York in 1832, settling in the Flushing/Newtown area. Mr. William Anderton, born between 1784-1891 and Elizabeth born about 1891 in England. From where their roots go I have not uncovered. Any help would be appreciated. God bless.

Hi michelynn.

Welcome to Northants forums.  :)

Middleton is on the border of Northants and Oxfordshire.

There does not seem to be a marriage our side for of the border
for William and Elizabeth.

Saying that they were living at Overthorpe as I am sure you know
as you noted the baptisms.

One person who maybe able to help further is Alan Clarke whose
web links are below my posting.

Sandy,
It would seem I need to brush up on my geography as I did last night when I found a William and Thomas born to William and Elizabeth in Claydon, Oxford around 5 miles away from Middleton-Cheney. I was not aware of William and Elizabeth were living in Overthorpe. Thank you! I found a William Anderton and Elizabeth Bray married in 1812 but that's all the way up in Lincolnshire, a far cry from the borders of Northampton and Oxford and no other marriages anywhere near the births of the two sons. In USA Census records William and Elizabeth's son William is found in Newtown, Queens with an Ann Anderton (b abt 1784) and there is a family in Lincoln including a William b 1791 and Ann b 1787, not terribly close to the marriage which took place in Lissington but still in the same county. I cannot confirm the connection thus far.

Any findings on a marriage of William and Elizabeth around 1814 on the borders of Northampton and Oxford would be appreciated. God bless.

Ahhh! Ding, ding, ding! A William Anderton and Elizabeth Hardyman married in Claydon in 1813! Alright, now I'm getting some where! Any more help or details would be appreciated.
