Howes or Howse?
(you have both spellings listed)
What was your 3T Grandmothers first name and we may be able to help.

Trish :)

Howes and Howse are frequently interchangeable and in the West of England you'll often find House too.  Although most families have now settled upon a single variant, that wasn't the case in the past.

Do take a gander at my (non-commercial) website dedicated to the Howes, Howse, Hows and House names.  I just checked my online database and there are at least 5 Howses in Alveston, 9 Howeses in Olveston,  9 (mixed) in Oldbury and 23 in Thornbury.  There may be a little overlap in the case of people who lived in both locations.

Good luck with your search.

Hello Sue.  Thank you for telling us about Eleanor's parents.  Intriguing that it should be a Mary Anne, as Eleanor's father was married to an Emma by the 1841 census and we had assumed her to be mother of all John's children.

Are your parish transcriptions available online anywhere?  We have a number of puzzles about people named Howes  and variants from that area which they might solve.

If they aren't online, would it be cheeky of me to ask for you to look for marriages for John Howes/se and Mary Ann or Emma?  If you can help, thank you very much in advance.
Regards

Hi Paul,  I`ve searched my resources but can`t find anything regarding John`s marriages, I`ve tried various spellings of the surname but still nothing that seems likely  :(

Hi Paul,

I had found the 1841 Census also and presumed it was a second Marriage.
JOSEPH was also Mary Anns Child also Christened 12 Sept 1830, Alveston and THOMAS, 01 April 1832 another.
It only leaves a very short time-frame for Mary Anns Death and Johns remarriage as CHARLES was Christened 04 May 1834 to JOHN/EMMA
(Source Familysearch.Org)

I cant find any conclusive Marriages either.

Trish :)
