John Hunt and Margaret Hynes or Hinds

Can anyone help with the above - they were married in 1870 reg. district Athlone.

They went on to have children: Owen b.28/6/1871
                                                  Martin b. 26/8/1873 - (My Great Grandfather)                
                                                  Kate b. 15/5/1879
                                                  Mary b. 03/08/1877
                                                  John b. 15/6/1875

Any information would be much appreciated.

Does Athlone No 1, West, Ireland mean anything.

"Athlone No. 1, west" refers to the registrars district. To find out the actual place of birth you need to order the relevant cert from the GRO.

Sandra,  I have information on this family and have been looking for more on the Hinds line.  Margaret would be my great great aunt.   Many of the family came to the U. S., particularly New York and Connecticut.  I hope you see this.  Your post explains why I haven't been able to find Martin!

Thanks, for replying - Margaret Hinds or Hynes it seems to change all the
time - she would have been my Great Great Grandmother.

I know that Martin and Mary Skelly settled in Glasgow - but I did not know
anything about him having any brothers and sisters found that info thru
Ancestry.

Would appreciate any info you may have.

Sandra,  What I have was originally based on verbal information from my grandmother years ago.  Since then I have been looking for documentation.  She told me that her mother was Helen "Ellen" HYNES (many variants) b.  12 Apr 1856 in Ballymahon.  Helen married Thomas KERRIGAN on 28 May 1884 in Brooklyn, NY.  She died 20 July 1908 in Brooklyn and is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, but there is no marker.  The family was extremely poor and the children were in an orphanage for a while.  Thomas KERRIGAN died in 1912 in a charity hospital.  My grandmother, Anna or Anne, said that Helen's parents were Daniel Hynes and Ann Horan but had no other details.   She said that Helen's siblings were:
Daniel -- no other details.
Martin -- no other details.
possibly Anne -- no other details.
Margaret -- married John HUNT and lived in Bridgeport Connecticut.    They were married in Athlone ca. 1870.  Does this match what you have? I have written to Ireland for a marriage record -- no answer yet.
   The Hunts had at least 8 children.  When their son Owen died in 1910, his obit said that his mother was deceased.
This is where it gets a little complicated.  The Hunts' daughter, Mary Ann "Mollie" was b. 3 Aug 1877 in Westmeath.  On 3 June in 1903 she married John J. EGAN in Hartford, Connecticut.  She died 16 Jan 1913, leaving 2 children.  John EGAN remarried to Mary Ann's cousin Anne KERRIGAN (my grandmother referred to above).  Their daughter (my mother) and her half-sister were thus both sisters and cousins.

Does this match what you have?  Do you have any more references to this family?

I have received my copy of the marriage certificate for John Hunt and Margaret.  Her name is given as Margarita Hinds.   They were married int he Catholic chapel of Mt. Temple, Registrar's district of Moate, Superintendent Registrar's District of Athlone, Westmeath on 7 May 1870.
John Hunt, 25, bachelor, laborer, resident of Knockaner, father John Hunt, laborer.
Margarita Hinds, 22, spinster, laborer, resident of Ballymurray [sic], father Daniel Hinds, blacksmith.
Witnesses: John Hunt (assume this is his father) and Ellen Hinds (probably her sister?).

Given this I searched Griffiths on Ancestry and found:

John Hunt, townland of Tubbrit, parish of Kilcleagh, barony of Clonlonan, Westmeath.  (Their daughter Mary' Anns birth record on FamilySearch says Quitbrit -- the nearest I could find for this is Tubritt so this reinforces the location.)

Daniel Hynes, Ballymurry, parish of Ballyloughloe,  barony of Clonlonan, Westmeath.  The marriage certificate says Ballymurray, but I've checked several references and and the standard modern name appears to be Ballymurry.

Can you tell me more about Martin?
