Bampton PR lookup please
« on: Wednesday 05 October 11 07:58 BST (UK) »
Hello
Does anyone have access to the PR's for Bampton Oxfordshire or is visiting the library please?

I am looking to confirm a marriage from 14 Sept 1807 in Bampton between Robert Smith and Mary Dutton.

I am also looking for any children baptised to this couple in Bampton- I believe I have a son : William Dutton Smith born 1810 (found on IGI).

William Dutton Smith married Elizabeth Molds in Fisherton Anger Wiltshire in 1838- witnesses were Robert Smith and Ann Smith...I am wondering if these might be siblings??

Any help or advice would be grand thanks!

Kylie

Hello Kylie

I have checked the OFHS transcript for Bampton.... the marriage of Robert Smith & Mary Dutton was not there.

Had a look on the OFHS Marriage Index, the marriage was included but not in Bampton.  It took place in Oxford St. Michael.  Unfortunately I don't have the prs for there.

Can confirm the baptism of William at Bampton 1 Jun 1810 s/o Robert & Mary Smith.  Sorry, no sign of any siblings.

Hi Kylie

from the St Michael's PRs - the marriage of Robert Smith and Mary Dutton took place on 14 Sep 1807 at St Michael's Oxford, after banns. Both described as of this parish, witnesses Wm. Dutton and Mary Dutton. No other information given.

Thank you so much!
I wonder if the witnesses- William and Mary Dutton- were the brides parents??

Was there any sign of any children to Robert and Mary Smith in the parish of St Michael's?

Or any suggestions on how I trace Robert Smith and Mary Dutton back any further?

Thank you again
Kylie

Hi Kylie

no sign of any children of Robert & Mary baptised at St Michael's. No Dutton baptisms either but there is the baptism of a Robert Smith 20 July 1785 (born 24 June) son of Robert and  Hester. Could be your Robert.

Thanks Carolyn
So perhaps the Duttons were from Bampton originally, even if it did say both Robert and Mary were of the parish of St Michael's.

MyFi!- Is there any sign of a likely baptism for a Mary Dutton in Bampton...possibly with parents William and Mary??

Thanks again for the help
Kylie

Hi Kylie

Sorry, no sign of a baptism in Bampton for Mary Dutton,

apart from a Thomas in 1776 all other Dutton baptisms were 1850/60/70s

Thank you for checking Bampton......

Does anyone have any suggestions of where I might look next to try and find out more about Robert Smith and his wife Mary Dutton?

It seems they were living in the parish of St Michael's in 1807- by 1810 had moved to Bampton (birth of son William)
William became a journeyman, but was living in Fisherton Anger (Wiltshire) in 1830's.

Would Robert and Mary be likely to have survived to be on the 1841 census? That would at least give ages to track back baptisms, although the Robert in 1785 seems a good possibility.....

Any more suggestions please?
Kylie
