St. Cuthberts Darlington marriage Fleetham-Handy
« on: Tuesday 04 October 11 13:38 BST (UK) »
According to an IGI entry Thomas Fleetham married Mary Handy on 5 Dec 1807 at St. Cuthberts, Darlington, Co. Durham.  I have lots of info on Thomas Fleetham but can find nothing on the birth of Mary Handy.  However, there is a baptism for Mary Hardy at St. Cuthberts on 29 Sep 1782.  Is it possible that dubious handwriting in the marriage register has been mis-transcribed and that Mary Handy is actually Mary Hardy.

Can some kind soul please look up the marriage register and check the clarity of the names.

Many thanks

Durham Records Online also has the name as Mary Handy  :(

However, their transcriptions are from the Durham Bishops Transcripts, so I suppose there is the possibility of an error in their source.

The online Bishops transcript for the baptism is there on page 174 of the BTs for Darlington St Cuthberts( just to save you searching for the page). she's the daughter of a farmer, but you can look at it yourself and see what you think :)

Yes these two children do indeed look like belonging to my couple, particularly as Mary was recorded as born in Evenwood in later census records and I had found no children between the marriage in 1807 and later children born from 1814 onwards.

Excellent stuff.  Many thanks.
