St Joseph's RC Cemetery, Moston
« on: Tuesday 04 October 11 12:36 BST (UK) »
Just for information, I have been advised that the charges for grave searches at St Joseph's RC Cemetery, Moston are £30.00 for the 1st year searched and £15.00 for each subsequent year searched.

I am not sure whether this has always been the case or whether they have recently introduced these charges.  There doesn't seem to be anything about this on the website.

www.salforddiocesecemeteries.org

These charges seem to be sort of similar to those charged by Salford City Council for their grave searches (£32.00 for a two year search and £16.00 for a search with an accurate date).

I am not sure if St Joseph's now charge (they didn't used to) for searches when you are able to provide an exact/accurate date of death.

These charges are scandalous, :-[ surely they must realise that the majority of people cannot afford this. (Or maybe this is the idea - to put people off applying)

They would have more interest if the prices were sensible, thereby encouraging researchers to use their service, make money and get recommended!!

Example -  the increase in the price for Certificates from the GRO, applications fell significantly, not long ago they had a survey about it and I remember filling in the question which asked how many certificates did you roughly apply for in the year before the price increase? answered about 40+, after the increase 9. :'(

Places always say 'we don't have time to fit something like this into our work load?'
but there are volunteers who would be willing to turn up for a day in doing these searches for them, if they had two volunteers, each who done one morning/afternoon or day a week it would help tremendously!!

Volunteers are out there!!!   ;D

I'm sure that everyone who has posted here on Rootschat with look-ups for St Joseph's and Salford Cemeteries would have paid a more reasonable fee to get  information and apply more often.

Hopefully soon, someone may have realisation that they can make money & be reasonable by being sensible with their pricing!! :-\

I'm sure others agree!!! :)

It's typical of greedy institutions that know they have the average person over a barrel. Either pay up or do without the information. It's so frustrating at times when all you want is the grave number or a name. On the plus side Salford are absolutely brilliant I contact the cemetery and give as much info as I can but I have always been able to give them specific dates to look for. and never been asked for money.

I agree that a more sensible price would result in larger profits. It's the same with Irish records either you pay a fortune for someone to do the research for you or you hit a brickwall with your search because the Irish Government and the Catholic Churches haven't got the insight to see they could make a fortune if they opened up their records online. Look at the prices Irish research companies charge. They must be losing more than they are making over a year because of their silly pricing.

What a good idea about volunteers to do the searches. I'm sure that many people could fit in a few hours to help out but I bet St Joseph's would come up with a good excuse as to why they couldn't have volunteers doing the searches.

BUT--Manchester have the records on-line and in the library-no charge.

If the others put them on-line, their staff wouldn't have to search, hence no need for charges.

If they were on-line a small charge could be sufferable-say so many searches for a fiver.

After all, havn't families got a right  to access to their family records??

Suppose they have to recoup the cost of scanning & web development by this company www.datafind.co.uk "not found a back door yet"  :D

Oldham cemetery records are on line and it is free

Only records from new and reopened graves can be found on the website, many thousands of burials will never go online, unless someone or the council get the funds to transcribe the registers

But I am happy to say I do have access to all the Oldham burial registers legally that is.

I've contacted them quite a few times this year trying to trace my catholic roots in Salford. It's still £15 even if you know the exact date of burial. It is pretty steep as I've been to the cemetery office itself and literally they have huge books there that contain all the information of each burial plot. I'm sure it doesn't take a huge lot of time to find who is buried in each plot but I think there's only one lady who works in there. For the money you get information on each internment, name, date of burial, age and address
