Gold Fields of Mysore
« on: Sunday 02 October 11 23:53 BST (UK) »
In March 1887 my great-grandfather was recruited by JohnTaylor and Sons, Managers of the Gold Fields of Mysore, Ltd., to work as a miner in India. He was then living in Devon.

By October 1888 he was dead and he was buried at the Wesleyan Chapel Cemetery, Mysore, aged 38.

I am keen to learn more about his life and death in India and would appreciate any advice or information that might help me in my quest.

Have a look at the following site

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolar_Gold_Fields

It gives a general overview of the minefields and a little history.

Another worth looking at is

Thanks for the links, Tony. The sites give a good general overview of the mining operation at the time. Now I have to try and discover where, and how, his death was registered. I'm not sure if it will be possible to obtain details of the cause of his death - disease or accident?

Dawn,

Just type Kolar Gold Fields into Google image search for pictures. I managed to find quite a few. Some of the pics will take you to a few interesting sites regarding the mines.

Unfortunately can't help with the records.

Trevor, my great grandfather was Henry Cowling, baptised 9 Jan 1851, Brentor, Devon (born Dec 1850?). Wife - Mary Ann.

Signed contract to work in Mysore Gold Fields for 3 years on 2 Mar 1887. Died 2 October 1888. Buried Wesleyan Chapel Cemetery, Mysore.

Yes, I have looked at FIBIS site but could not find anything that appeared to relate.

Hi,  Sorry to hijack your thread.

I have a Richard Saxty who emigrated in 1904 and by 1907 was in the Kolar Gold  fields.  I am curious - have you found records that show recruitment contracts that may help me find more about my Richard?

I have recently read KOLAR GOLD FIELDS - DOWN MEMORY LANE  - As I had family there in various stages of its history I found it a good read for the general social history of the gold fields and the people living their.

Best wishes
Becky
