Where is Luce Graveyard
« on: Sunday 02 October 11 22:12 BST (UK) »
Hello,

does anyone know the location of Luce Graveyard and if any MIs have been transcribed.

George Chamber's "Caledonia" published in 1824 mentions it as follows

"The present parish of Hoddom comprehends the three parishes of Hoddom, Luce and Ecclesfechan which were united in the year 1609"  ...... snip ..... The church of Luce stood on the east side of the Annan below the influx of the Mein at a hamlet which still bears the name of Luce The church has been entirely demolished but its appropriate cemetery is still used for its original purpose"

But I cannot find it on the old OS 6" maps, or on google maps

I have received an email about the following inscriptions which apparently are there

Luce Graveyard

Here lyes John Kennedy son to George Kennedy in Yeats, (Yetts) he died 30th May year 1785 aged 5 years and 10 months also Mary Kennedy his sister, she died 31st December in the same year aged 8 months also Thomas Kennedy their son who died 10th February year 1790 aged 8 months.

Here lyes Margaret (sic) Irving spouse to Thomas Kennedy in Ditewhat (?) who departed this life on November year 1704 aged 45 years. Here lyes John Kennedy in Yets, he died January 11th year 1793 aged 79 years and Jean Henderson (?)

and I'd love to know of any other Kennedys which may be buried there if it still exists

thanks in advance

it would appear that the graveyard was ploughed up about 1840-50

http://www.genealogydunedin.co.nz/Documents/Scottish%20Monumental%20Inscriptions%20that%20are%20in%20the%20Dunedin%20NZSG%20Librar1.pdf

I have emailed the society to find out where they obtained them from

Hi Tkgafs,
Dumfries & Galloway Family History Society recently published the Shannon/Gilchrist surveys of Annandale graveyards which were made in the 1960s.  The booklet for Hddom Parish includes Luce graveyard and details of price and postage is given in their website at: (www.dgfhs.org.uk)
The parish of Hoddom lies about 16 miles east of the town of Dumfries. There are actually four graveyards within this parish, namely Hoddom, Ecclefechan, St Kentigern and Luce. There are sure to be KENNEDY's in some of them.
The surveyor's notes for Luce burial ground advises that there was little remaining of this old graveyard, though I haven't ever visited this location I understand there are about twenty old stones, mostly what would have been horizontal slabs, now stacked around an old burial enclosure.  Many of these old stones are no longer readable.
St Kentigern’s was the original parish church in the 12th and 13th century and today nothing of it remains but grass covered foundations. Luce church was demolished in 1609 when the parish was united with Hoddom.
Until the mid 1970s Hoddam parish church was located at Hoddomcross.  This church burned downon the night of 2nd February 1975. The present parish church is located in Ecclefechan and was foremerly a Free Church built after the period known as the Disruption in the mid 19th century.

I will send you a PM.
Cheers,
Sy

Just a touch overgrown, I'd say

thanks to everyone for the replies. I thought that its was very ironic that when I'm trying to track down some Kennedys to see the following

"Luce Church was demolished when the parish was united with Hoddom in 1609. Foundations 30 ft by 15 ft were seen by a Farmer Kennedy ploughing at Luce Mains about 1900. The graveyard has been ploughed since 1840-50, except for the small corner fenced off round the Irving tomb, which is dated 1700. "
