Death - MacKinnon/Cullen/McCluskey (Toronto)
« on: Saturday 01 October 11 14:33 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone access death records to look up my ggrandmother Rose Ann MacKinnon, Cullen or McCluskey daughter of John McCluskey and Rose Cullen.

She was born Rose Ann Cullen (illigitimately) 25 Dec 1864 in Cambusnethan, Wishaw, Lanark, Scotland & died  Bet. 1932 - 1941 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Her address prior to her death was 191 First Avenue, Toronto, Ontario.

She was married under her fathers name McCluskey and her maiden name on all her childrens births is McCluskey although her parents never married.

Her husband who pre deceased her was Angus MacKinnon (buried in Scotland)

They had 11 children all born in Scotland but all emigrated to Canada except Joseph (my grandfather)
Joseph, John, Peter, Angus, Mary, William, Ann, Rose Ann, Donald, Thomas & Neil Joseph MacKinnon who was a priest & was buried Mar 1971, Mount Hope Cemetery. I don't know where Rose Ann would have been buried but Mount Hope seems most likely?

I would appreciate any info. or photo's of headstones if possible please?

Thanks,

Anne.

Hi there,

I found her obituary in the Toronto Star newspaper.  She died a bit later than you had originally thought - on Thursday, July 18, 1946.   It says that she died at her home.  It gives her husband's name and says she is the mother of Mary, Annie, William of Corby England, Donald and Rev. Father Neil MacKinnon.  She is the sister of Mrs. Robert Paterson.  Funeral Mass at St. Ann's church and interment at Mount Hope Cemetery on the following Monday.     It says she was in her 83rd year.

The obituary is in the Toronto Star, Friday July 19, 1946 page 19.

You can find the Toronto Star Pages of the Past site online and search through digital images of this newspaper.  It is a paid site, unless you have free access to it through your local library.  If you would like an image of the actual obituary, you can sent me a PM.

RK

PS - If you want a photo, I might be able to get one for you.  I will be near the cemetery on Tuesday of next week and if the weather isn't awful, I will see what I can do.   ;D

Hi again,

I had looked in the Star for the dates you originally gave (1932-1941).  I didn't find Rose, but I did find a few other members of the family.

Thomas A. MacKinnon died Jan 17, 1941.  He was the son of Rose MacKinnon and the late Angus MacKinnon.  He died after a long illness and had lived at 191 First Avenue.  He was buried at Mount Hope.  The obituary is in the Jan 18, 1941 edition, page 28.

Rose Ann King (nee MacKinnon) died in Buffalo on April 16 1941.  She was the wife of Herbert King and sister of Rev Father MacKinnon.  It says she was resting at her mother's home at 191 First Avenue, and would be buried in Mount Hope.    The obituary is in the April 17, 1941 edition, page 36.

Angus MacKinnon died Dec 4, 1942.  He was the son of Mrs. Rose Ann MacKinnon and brother of Mary, William, Donald, Mrs. D. Callaghan (Ann) and Rev Father Neil MacKinnon.    He is also buried in Mount Hope.  His obituary is in the December 5 1942 edition, page 28.

I hope this helps,
RK.

Hi Kathy,

Thanks for all this extra info. as a lot of it I didn't have and it makes a great difference to have the death details as well as the birth details.

Rose King also had a child who died young but I don't know the sex but I think it was within 20yrs of her own death - possibly a less time gap?

Others who may be buried close by at Mount Hope are surname Callaghan. Ann MacKinnon (daughter of Rose Ann) was married to Duncan Callaghan.

Many thanks,

Anne.

Hi J.J. - Thanks for your PM, much appreciated indeed!

Anne,I knew Fr Neil MacKinnon, loved him, great man

Hi JT, welcome to RC & thanks for your message!

Sorry for the delay but I haven't really been on RC much in the last few yrs.

I'd love to know about Neil as everyone had good words to say about him & it's such a great pity he died so young in not very good circumstances.

Do you happen to have any pics of him?
I do have a few & a large one of him when he was ordained.

While I'm here, I have MacEachen in my family tree, do you know if you have any connections to South Uist, Inverness-shire, Scotland also known as the Outer Hebrides &/or Long Island?

Hopefully you will receive this message.

Anne
