Hi folks. Stephen Michael Cahillane was born 1909, Killorglin, Co. Kerry. He married in Kensington 1939. Family lore says he was awarded The Burma Cross. We have absolutely nothing on his military history, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Burma Star was a campaign medal, not a gallantry award so the "where and when" won't relate to one particular incident.
When  - would be 1945, when the WW2 campaign stars were issued.
Where - the qualification criteria will depend which service he served in, you don't say if he was army, navy, RAF etc
There isn't a list of recipients as such, it would either be stated explicitly on his service papers or you'd easily be able to deduce it from his whereabouts.

The Burma Star Association is quite active - http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,558219.0.html - they have a forum. You may strike lucky because of the unusual name.

To order his records from the MOD you usually need his regiment if not also his number. The association's website has details of how to apply. It costs £30 - free if his spuse is still alive. In all cases you need a death certificate if he died after discharge.
