Mary Ann Bridgeman b1811? Newtown, Hants
« on: Friday 30 September 11 11:20 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm a bit stuck finding the ancestry of this lady.  There are several public trees on An****** that show her as the daughter of a James Bridgeman and Ann Neate, but I cannot find anything to conclusively link her to them.

I found on familysearch.org a marriage record for Mary Ann and James Bendall on 2 Aug 1830 in Kingsclere, Hampshire, but I cannot find the original of that record to see if a father/mother is given.

I found her in the censuses in Thatcham Berks 1841, Ecchinswell Hants 1851 and thereafter Greenham.

So she's always on the Berks/Hants/poss Wiltshire border area.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks

Hi Peter,

Welcome to RoosChat.  :)

I've found Mary Ann's baptism in Newton in 1813.

Mary Ann Bridgeman, daughter of James & Ann Bridgeman, baptised 5 September 1813.

Parents' names are not recorded on marriage records before 1837 -they might be witnesses but it would not identify a relationship.

The marriage of her parents is proving elusive - I suspect it took place in Berkshire, especially since they seem to hop across the county border every so often.

Nell

Mary Ann Bridgeman and James Bendel(l) are my 2x gt grandparents

They married at St Mary Kingsclere  02 August 1830-both of Ecchinswell

Mary Ann was the daughter of James Bridgeman and Ann Neate baptied at Newtown (registers are in the Hampshire RO)

I  then become a bit stuck finding a baptism for James ,c 1785 from census and death ages,he consistantly gives his place of birth as Newtown but there is not a baptism for him there and the Bridgemans in that area of Berks/Hants are legion !

Ann Neate was baptised 04 April 1790 at  Aldbourne Wilts d John Neate and Mary Orchard

They married 21 May 1810 at St Nicholas Newbury

I think, using the census and death ages that James Bendel(l) is the one baptised 04 May 1806 at Kingsclere s Elizabeth

Are you connected ?

Mary Ann Bridgeman i& James Bendel(l) are my 2x gt grandparents.

She was bapt 05 September 1813 at Newtown d James B and Ann Neate and married James Bendel(l ) 02 August 1830 at St Mary Kingsclere (both of Ecchinswell)

James Bridgeman and Ann Neate were married 21 May 1810 at St Nicholas Newbury

James Bridgeman-possibly baptised  at Lichfield  28 November 1783  s James Bridgeman  & Mary ?

Ann Neate baptised 04 April 1790 at Aldbourne Wilts d John Neate & Mary Orchard

My gt grandmother is Ann Bendell d Mary Ann & James Bendell born c 1831 at Ecchinswell, are you connected ?

Tried "modifying"earlier and managed to delete everything so this is my second attempt !!

Meant to say have a look at the "Kingsclere Families" site maintained by John Lewis (just google)

Hi Kimbrey,

Many thanks for that very interesting post.  We are indeed connected I believe.  James Bendell and Mary Ann were my 4xgt grandparents I think via my maternal grandmother.  I am descended from James and Mary Ann's son Thomas (b1838 in Newbury).  Thomas appears to have had a curious life in terms of marriages/partners as you may know.  V happy to share what I found of them and their descendents.

May I ask a question about Ann Neate?  I found what I thought might be her and James on the 1851 census in Newtown aged 45, married to James aged 64.  On there is says she is born in 'Little Hungerford' and James Newtown, but I could well be wrong.  Do you think that's the right census entry for them?

Hi  Peter

Yes,it is correct
Ann (  Neate)  was buried 22 March 1829 at Newtown and James re married another Ann

03 January 1831 at Thatcham
James Bridgeman & Ann Castle

There do not appear to be anymore children

James was buried 27 January 1870 at Newtown aged 84
and Ann (Castle) died 2nd Q 1858 Newbury RD,she is not buried at Newtown so may be at Greenham

Thomas certainly does have a colouful life,I do have some info on him collected over the years.

Contact me by e-mail if you wish  :)
