Horne Brothers (Grocer's) of Shipley

My great grandfather Uriah Horne was in a Grocer's business with his brothers Joseph and Albert. The address is listed as both 11 Commercial Street and Wainman Street, Shipley. In early 1900 he left the business and became an auctioneer. I have references to Horne Brothers having some other locations and am interested if anyone else knows anything about the stores. In my grandfathers death in Eldwick in 1949 there is also a reference from people there representing Horne Brothers.

My dad used to work at Horne Brothers in Shipley from 1936 to 1948. His name was Harry Bell

I have actually read your remembrances about your father online. I saw a picture of him that you had included of him at Horne Bros. I would be so interested in any memories that he may have told you. I have so many questions if you were interested in answering them. Was there more then one store? Was Joseph the brother who ran things. Did the store survive in any form? Do you know anything about the family? My father was Uriah's grandson and he emigrated to Canada in 1949. He has since passed away so I am trying to recover any stories that help me understand his life.
Thank you so much for your time.

I think my dad left Horne Brothers because the store was cutting back on staff. I vaguely remember my dad taking me to Horne Brothers when i was small and can remember all the sacks of flour etc in there. I can remember the old proper wooden floors and you had to go up some steps to get in the store.Im sorry I cant be of any more help x

Thanks - I will add that info to what I have. Where do I go to access those old ordnance surveys? So far I search on line, and use ancestry.co.uk but I am so interested in finding the old ordnance and maps online.
Many thanks, Bridget

Thanks. I was hoping to be able to pull something up online as I am doing this from NY. I am tempted to subscribe to old-maps.co.uk but am wary that if I subscribe I wont see much more detail. Actually think Ill just give it a try regardless.
Thank You for your help
Bridget
