Thanks yes I do have this info. Ann was born Agnes but it was common in Scotland then to use the name Ann or Annie. On Alexander's marriage certificate she calls herself Annie. I believe she died young as did her husband John, he did in 1844 of inflamation to the Kidneys age 34. He was a marble cutter so that would have been a factor. John's Parents are Archibald Cochrane and Margaret Linton. I am struggling to find their birth records and the children's. Apparently it wasn't uncommon for parents not to register the birth's of their children as they had to pay and in large families they couldn't afford it.

Hi again,
Just noticed that you'd already mentioned the info about 1851 Census :-[.
Blame the heatwave and the fact I've one eye on the computer screen and one on Andy Murray at Wimbledon!!
It's possible Annie/Agnes died prior to 1851 Census as I didn't see anyone who appeared to be her when I looked. But it was also common at this time for women to revert to using their maiden when widowed so she could be else where under Grant, although would she leave her small children??

Thanks for remonding me, I've just come in and I forgot to put the TV on. Heatwave LOL. it's 30 degrees here in Norfolk.

I wouldn't have thought she would have left her children but maybe she met a man and ran off, it's been happening for years lol

She could have got re-married and not been able to have the children. Some of them went to America when they grew up and some went to Australia so maybe she went with them.

You mention that Agnes is recorded as Annie ( as you say, a variant of Agnes ) on Alexander's marriage certificate. When did he marry and is Annie recorded as being deceased at that date?

Alexander Cochrane married Margaret Linton on 18/2/1804 and on the marriage certificate she is listed as Annie Cochrane nee Grant (Deceased)

Are you researching the same family as I am? I am doing this for a friend in Australia

Sorry yes. Archibald married Margaret Linton in 1804 and John married Agnes (Annie) Grant 12/5/1827 and on her son  Alexander's certificate she is Deceased

Most of them were marble cutters and masons or stone sculptures. there is a piece on the web about 2 brothers that went to Canada and made names for themselves doing sculptures on buildings etc but they only gave one brothers name and no details where they were actually born.

I can concentrate now the tennis is over lol
