Archibald COCHRANE / John COCHRANE Edinurgh 1800s
« on: Thursday 29 September 11 08:32 BST (UK) »
Looking for information about the family of John COCHRANE born circa 1808 Midlothian, Scotland (I think son of Archibald COCHRANE and Margaret). John's wife was named Annie according to census records. I haven't been able to find a marriage but there is one between John COCHRANE and Agnes GRANT in 1827 so am wondering if it could be them.
John and Annie had 8 children:
Archibald born circa 1829
Rob c 1829
John c 1830
Margaret c 1836 (married John Leslie GILMOUR 1854 Edinburgh)
Mary c 1838
Barbara c 1840
Alexander b 1843
Isabella b 1845

Many thanks

Hi phveens

Agnes and Ann are common variants - see www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=agnes

There is a birth entry showing for Archibald on 12 Aug. 1828 Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh to John and Agnes (Grant).

Yes. Thanks. I wonder why there are no other births for the rest of the children. They are all said to have been born in Edinburgh too.

There are gaps in the registers many a time. Also, it could be that the family moved away from the established Church of Scotland at any time and records may not be available for that. All sorts of reasons really (including the fact it cost the family money to register/christen their children which in many cases was not possible for many families).

Hi, I am researching the Cochrane Family for descendants in Australia. I have come against the same as you with John Cochrane and Agnes Grant. Alexander went to Australia with is family. His marriage certificate shows parents as John and Annie Grant. I have 1841 Census showing her as Ann and they live with Archibald and Margaret (Linton I believe) but on the 1851 Census the children are living with the Grandparents and no parents listed so I think they died young but I can find no record of their deaths either. They were a family of Marble masons and Sculptures and said to be realted to the earls of Dundonlad and the Barons Lamingtons but I am struggling to find a connection without the records for Joh and Agnes. if you find anything I would be grateful for your info.

You have the same and as much as I have I'm afraid though I have to admit I have not looked further in recent months. I'll let you know if I make any progress. I would be interested to know about Alexander's family and when he immigrated please. I am researching this family for my friend who also lives in Australia.
Thanks

Hi,

I have found a death for John Cochrane 1844 Edinburgh, he died of Inflamation of the Kidneys age 34. This is not uncommon as there would have been dust from the marble they worked with. Annie Grant was born Agnes, this also was common for Agnes to be called Annie, I haven't found a death for her yet. They were married 12/5/1827 North Leith Edinburgh Midlothian Scotland.

I am researching this for a Cochrane that lives in Buxton, Queensland, I wonder if we are researching for people in the same family? Have you uploaded your tree to Ancestry as a public tree? I have a membership at present so I would be able to look and we could compare what we have so far. The amercian Cochrane's went to Ohio and some were Marble cutters there I will send you some details later as there is quite a bit. There is a public tree on Ancestry for Robert Cochrane b 1829 but they have a different wife for John, I contacted them but they said ther's was correct but I'm not so sure. If it is the correct Robert he then went to NZ. The plot thickens!!

More Later

Regards
Terri (not my given name either lol)

Hi,
Don't know if you already have this info-
The family can be found on the 1841 and 1851 Census on www.freecen.org.uk.

Agnes/Annie Cochrane is not listed with her children on the 1851 Census. They are listed as grandchildren with Margaret Cochrane a widow as being head of the household at Morrisons Close.
