James Garnet Carroll

My grandfather James Garnet Carroll was born in London in 1889.  I have traced his life as far as 1904 when he left the Ragged School in London (the Arethusa).  However, he's disappeared in 1911 along with his mother Catherine Carroll.  I have reason to believe he was in the army and it's highly likely he was garrisoned in Ireland.  Whether his mother went with him??    His family actually came from County Offally but were estranged.  The story was that the family came from Cork (not true) but I wonder whether he was garrisoned there.  Can anybody help me please?

To find military records (if they survive) best to post a query on Armed Forces board.

He has a really early number and i've been told that his record was destroyed in the blitz.  He re joined in 1914 and went to war.  From there, I have all the info.  I just wondered whether it was possible to find him on the 1911 census if he's in the army?

Thank you very much for doing that.  It's really good of you.  Sorry to be a pest - but - would they not have the full name or was it illegible?  My grandfather was a drummer in the army.  I guess I'll never get to the bottom of it.  It just seems strange they both he and his mother disappear in 1911.

People in instituations (soldiers in barracks, patients in hospitals and asylums, prisioners in gaol, etc.) were listed on the enumeration forms by their intials according to the census instructions.

Perhaps have a go at searching for the mother and you might find him in the same area.

I did try, honestly, but couldn't find her either.  I thought maybe I wasn't doing it correctly.  Thank you very much

When and where was mother born? You can use 'more search options' on census search to narrow down catagories such as religion, birthplace, etc.

Her name was Catherine Carroll nee Douglass.  She has been known to use Douglass at times!!  She was born in 1861 in Kentish Town, London.
