Blackwood family Ayrshire
« on: Tuesday 27 September 11 21:03 BST (UK) »
Hello, I'm trying to trace my Blackwood roots from New Cumnock Ayrshire,
Jame Blackwood married Isabella Taylor in approx 1840 . Also, I am trying to get details of the marriage and Isabella's death  in approx 1846.
I think James remarried Christina Heron subsequently and I wish to trace that link too.
Has anyone  any suggestions on the route I should take?

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi bullzeye,
welcome to Rootschat.
I had a look on the IGI www.familysearch.org and no joy.

I recon your best bet would be the pay per view website for Scottish records.

Hi and welcome from me too

Quote
Jame Blackwood married Isabella Taylor in approx 1840

There is an 1841 entry for a James Blackwood born 1823 but no Isabella so suspect marriage may have been after 1841.  He was living in New Cumnock but shown as not born there.  That ties in with the 1851 entry below

1851 census for New Cumnock

James Blackwood 28 b Kirkconnel, Dumfries - shepherd
Christina   22 b Muirkirk, Ayrshire
Helen 9 b New Cumnock
Jannet   5 b New Cumnock
George Lammie 15 servant b Kirkcudbright
New Cumnock ED 3 Page11 Line 1

From the IGI

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

HELEN BLACKWOOD Birth:  23 SEP 1841    Christening:  17 NOV 1841   New Cumnock, Ayr,
Father:  JAMES BLACKWOOD    Mother:  ISABELLA TAYLOR

Submitted IGI entry so somebody else is researching the same family

JANET BLACKWOOD   Birth:  22 NOV 1845   New Cumnock, Ayr
Father:  JAMES BLACKWOOD    Mother:  ISABELLA TAYLOR

James Blackwood   Birth:  1833   Of, New Cumnock,   Death:  22 FEB 1906   New Cumnock, Ayr
Spouse:  Christina Herron or Heron   Marriage:  1850   New Cumnock, Ayr, Scotland

So Isabella died on or after 22.11.1845 and before ? 1850

Many thanks for the link.
I think they may have transcribed JBs birthdate incorrectly as he was I believe born in Kirkconnel in 1823.
i shall try to lookat the IGI records to confirm the detail.
I t looks that Isabella died prior to 1850
I'll try looking in Scotlands people for her.
 Best regards,Bullzeye

Hi

My husband is descended from James Blackwood and Christina Heron's daughter, Christina, who was born in 1859 and we have just started looking into this side of things.  We would be willing to share information with you.  I think James's age in his death record is 10 years out as it doesn't tie in with either 1851 or 1861 census, and it would put him too young for having children when the first few were born.

Hi
In regard to 1851 census for New Cumnock - my 2Ggrandad is George Lammie - i have checked my tree - no blackwoods.
We are a strong farming family still today George at 15 worked as a shepherd for Blackwoods he later had his own farm.
I also have some Heron's in my tree -  farmer folk generally married other farming folk!
Suggestion - look at some old farming info around ayrshire - i have found odd bits of info on my tree this way. I have also found books with stories recorded in too - from this i also found a marriage linking to Robert Burns and Robert Burns documenting one of my ancestors - I would not have found the link if stayed on ancestry pages.

James Blackwood 28 b Kirkconnel, Dumfries - shepherd
Christina   22 b Muirkirk, Ayrshire
Helen 9 b New Cumnock
Jannet   5 b New Cumnock
George Lammie 15 servant b Kirkcudbright
New Cumnock ED 3 Page11 Line 1

Happy hunting!
