Recognise this Edwinstowe House of 1900?
« on: Tuesday 27 September 11 20:21 BST (UK) »
Hi
A granddaughter of my partner's ancestor returned to the house where her mother was born in Edwinstowe in 1900.. she came for a visit from Illinois. What I would like to know is whether house still stands. I realise that anything could have happened between 1900 and now.  The house might still be standing or could have been knocked down a few days later or could have been hit by a truck, etc, etc.  However, someone on site may know Edwinstowe...

Thanks
Seth

Hi

Very little.

In 1841 census..around the time of birth of the mother of woman who took photograph..the family are recorded in Edwinstowe, the second to last entry on the mere 8 pages of the Edwinstowe census. They were Charles Robinson (b.1816) and his wife Helen (actually Ellen Candlin) and a new son William who would later be injured in the civil war. They may have moved in the village between 41 and c.1849 when they migrate, but probably not. That the entry is so late on the census suggests the house will be at the end of some part of  Edwinstowe, the end of the path of the enumerator. Which is something, but not much.

There aren't many of the old cottages left standing in the village itself, my thoughts would be maybe at the bottom end of East Lane, or Mill Lane maybe?

I have now looked and Mill Lane looks as if it would be the kind of extermity to the village that might be last on census. She took another couple of photos of the day, but I don't think they help.

Helo Seth2,

If you are still looking, there is a similar row of cottages on Church Street.

There are three, of what appears to have been a row of four, still standing. The fourth one, which would be the right hand in your photo, has been demolished. You can see on the brickwork that there had been one or more on the end.

If you look on Street View it is 14 Church Street.

Kaycee, thank you very much. This is terrific. Could be it!
Thank you for taking the time. My partner will no doubt be pulling her car up to have a peek..
