Abney Park Cemetery
« on: Tuesday 27 September 11 16:43 BST (UK) »
I was reading some of the posts from January 2010 which said that finding information on graves at Abney Park was rather difficult.  I am visiting in a couple of days and hope the information I have been given is accurate.  I also e-mailed a number of times, but without success until I sent to the link for the Abney Park Trust, which resulted in me getting a reply from a researcher and who answered my next email straight away.  I know that Abney Park is somewhat of a wildlife reserve now and that the older graves are probably quite hard to read, but the researcher said that he had found the grave I want, so hopefully I will find it too.  I will keep you posted as others might also want to visit.  The grave I am visiting has 7 relations in it dating from 1870, so fingers crossed.

How did you get on with your search at Abney Park Cemetery?  I have just discovered through the database that 6 relatives were buried there 1883-1912 and wondered about access in the woodland areas.

Hi I researched my family in Abney Park some years ago and found their web site very helpful. You could download their list of graves and occupants from http//freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/ abneypark/name/names-pal1000.html. hopefully its still there. On my list it gives a grid ref. number so you can find the correct area and grave no. youre looking for. Believe me its a wilderness and I couldnt get to my ancestors graves as they were through numerous other graves and a jungle of brambles. Unless your graves are on or near the paths they advise you not to stray further in as you might find yourself disappearing into a hole.  Saying that, its well worth a visit.

Hi Newcom3 and thanks for that info.  I had found all their details online which was very useful, something I wasn't expecting!  I emailed Abney Park cemetery asking about headstones and received a reply back today saying that 5 of my people are in the same grave and it would cost £10 to supply details of the headstone.  Apparently the grave plot is next to the path so should be accessible when & if I visit.  Will go armed with secateurs and thick gardening gloves, just in case!

Hi

As Abney Park is now considered to be a nature reserve, you should seek permission to cut things down before you do when you visit.

Its VERY overgrown for older graves. I have about 15 people buried there, Including my Great Great Grandparents Charles and Emily Taylor (nee Petifer). There is a full grown tree right over where the grave is.
