Rourke Rorke Howth
« on: Tuesday 27 September 11 12:38 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

I just saw this thread and I was hoping that maybe some of you could help me, trace my family

my Father, Grand father, and GGrand Father's where all named John Rorke and lived on the Hill of Howth, or the summit, they also all had the nickname "Darkie", due to their colouring

John Rorke JUN(GrandFather) DOB 1901 married Christina Conway

John Rorke SNR (GGrandFather) DOB 1873 to 1940 married  Mary Gibney

in the 1901 cenus there appears to be an Anne Gibney (unmarried) living on the same property a sister
and also a Patrick Rourke (fisherman) DOB 1851 and a Anne Rourke (Wife) DOB 1851. I'm wondering if it's possible that these are John Rorke's snr parents.

I also see in the 1911 census that their is a lot of Rorke/Rourke/O'Rourke living in Howth most of them fishermen and around the same age as Patrick Rourke (spelt "Rorke" in 1911 census) could it be possible that these are related.

Any help anyone has that could shed some light on this would be great

Thanks in advance

Don

Have you marriage certs for John & Mary and John and Christina ?

This would show father's names (and occupations), and help confirm connections and work back further

Thanks Shane,

I haven't found the marriage certs yet, but have found the families on 1901 and 1911 census, I going to check out you link now, and I'm planning to head out to Howth, later this week.

I fairly sure that everything going back to Gibney and Rorke marriage is right, as family members can still remember it luckily enough the Gibney's lived to good old age. Anne Gibney owned the small farm on the hill of Howth, and left it to John and Mary, it's now owned by cousins of mine

What we also had being told and I wonder if anyone had heard this rumor, was a Spanish fisherman had landed in Howth and that the Rorke/Rourkes where descendant from him (hence the name Darkie). Hence why I wondering is there a link between Howth town and the hill.

Again Thanks for your reply and pointing me in another direction. Greatly appreciated

Don

Hi
Just back from the Library in Howth and what a worth while visit it was. If anyone is interested in the Rorke/Rourke's of Howth, some one kindly drew up 5 pages of family trees (although I'm not sure how accurate they are but the might definitely of use as pointers) also if anyone would like jpegs of these please just let me know, or if they want a name looked up

the Orginal families on each page are as follows

Hugh Rourke (Hearth Money Rolls c 1663) has 6 parents and children charts from 1790's period

Ignatius Rourke married to Ellen Larkin and their children also Thomas Rourke and Catherine Moore and children c 1845ish

Edward Rorke + Rose Murphy 3 generations marriage 1845ish

Christopher Rourke + Jane Farrell married 1839 3 generations

Patrick Rorke O'Rourke + Catherine Kirwan married 1838 4 generations

I hope this will be of assistance to someone

Hi Don,

I was just searching for info on the Old I.R.A, veteran John Darkie Rorke from Howth and came across this thread. John or Darkie as he is known locally lived on the East Mountain in Howth and had a lifelong association with Beann Eadair GAA. as a player and administrator. I hope this information is useful to you in some way. I can probably get you more detailed information if you want.  There are still a few older locals who I can contact.

Kind Regards

Brian
