Middleton/Bennett/Goodwin
« on: Tuesday 27 September 11 11:06 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to discover if there was a Middleton/Bennett marriage around 1732 in Wheston or Tideswell. These people would have been associated with Lowfields Farm in Wheston.
I have in my possession a silver spoon, thought to be a wedding spoon which is dated with the above year. (and engraved)

Sales transactions on the farm deeds have
1729 Robert Middleton Sen. and Robert Middleton Junior and Mary his wife to Ben Bennett
and
1736 Robert Brennan Esq. to Ben Bennett and William Bennett (deeds)

If anyone researching these families have come across anything of interest along these lines, I'd love to know.

There's no Middleton/Bennett marriage in the Tideswell registers I'm afraid. The only marriage in Tideswell involving either of those families in 1732 was between Robert Wilson & Hannah Bennett.

However there seems to have been a fair number of Catholics in Wheston around that time, so there could possibly be a marriage to be found in the Hathersage Catholic records, which are available at the record office in Matlock.
Too many to list! But always particularly interested in my eight ggp lines : ALLEN, HODGKINSON, FLINT, SWINDELL, SHELDON, BINGHAM, JACKSON - all in Derbyshire; and ELLWOOD in Cambridgeshire

Thanks for your reply . Unlikely to  be Catholic connection, our family had it's own pew in the Tideswell cathedral, Although you never know. One family member ran away to get married at Peak Forest.

I am interested in the Tideswell Middleton family.

On Sept 5, 1839 Robert and Ann Middleton, with their two daughters, Jane & Mary, immigrated to the US.

When Jane Middleton died in 1885  in NY she left  2,500 dollars to Edward Hunstone and  to Jane Davis. both of Tideswell.

I was hoping to find information about the family.

Hi,

Using the information you quote from deeds?  It would suggest that a Robert Middleton Senior and his
son Robert Middleton Jnr and his wife Mary sold land/property to a Ben Bennet.
This would suggest that RM Senior was a widow, also that Mary wife of RM Junior would probably have
to be a party to the sale because the land could be part of her Dower.

There is a marriage of a Robert Middleton = Mary Middleton 7th October 1726 at Hope Derbyshire.
(If same family assume this is RM Jnr.)

There is also a birth of a Robert Middleton 12.5.1729 Tideswell  son of Robert Middleton.

Re the spoon as you are connecting this to a Marriage is it engraved with a M & B?

Hi,

I'm not too sure who on this e-mail chain I might have spoken to already about this (that's the problem with everyone having "usernames" on here) but I am descended from the Goodwins of Lowfields Farm, Wheston.

I might have some relevant information regarding the Bennett / Goodwin link.

Hi Simon, Yes. Your NZ cousin here. Interesting whom one should meet on Rootschat. A while ago I made contact with a Furness descendant who will be a distant cousin to us both.

Hi Cousin,

I thought it might be too much of a coincidence to hear of someone new who had the same spoon you had described to me years ago - but I thought I had better play it safe and post a reply on here, just in case.

Hope you are.
