GARRETTs in WOOLWICH - 1700s, SALISBURY IN GLOUCESTER
« on: Monday 26 September 11 16:24 BST (UK) »
Would anyone researching GARRETTs in Woolwich in the 1700s, please contact me.
My "brick wall" is John & Mary Garrett whose son was William James Garrett, born 1801 and baptised at St. Mary Magdalene, Woolwich.
I am hoping that someone else is researching the same Family.
I have the complete Family Tree from 1801 to the present.

ALSO, trying to find the Descendants of Walter Cyril Salisbury and Eva Elizabeth Hoare. I think that Eva died in Gloucester in 2000 and Walter died in Lancashire.
Eva is my Sister-in-Law's Aunt and she is trying to connect with her Cousins.
Any help that you could give me would be most appreciated.
    Thank you,
John Richard Garrett

Hi John

You have posted on the Surrey Completed Look up Requests board.

Woolwich was in Kent until 1889 when it became part of London. It was never part of the county of Surrey. Do you wish to have your post moved to a Kent board?

   Hi Valda,
Sorry about that. My Sister-in-Law who is 79 years old is a little desparate.
Please move my message to the Kent Chat.
I could have sworn when I Clicked on someone's Interests, it said Salisburys anywhere in England.
That is why I posted the message here.

Hi John

I've recently answered a query on the Coastguards of Yesteryear website for someone researching the Garrett family, this took me back to Woolwich; perhaps you could continue the story?

I have just come across your posting.  My reason for writing is that I have 2 corner angle chairs which have the sign Garrett & Co House  Furnishers and Upholsterers. Woolwich.
I have been totally unable to find any reference to them on the web so thought that you might know something. If not, then this is another avenue for you to explore.

Thank you both very much for your comments on the GARRETT CHAIRS.
Our Family had always thought that the company was started by My Great Grandfather William Garrett who was born in St. Luke Old Street London in 1837 and married Elisabeth BOOTY in November 1859, but if the company was started in Woolwich, then perhaps my GG Grandfather William James Garrett born in Woolwich in June 1801 started the company earlier.
His parents were John & Mary Garrett.
William James Garrett was a "Brushmaker" and I understand that the Society of Brushmakers eventually merged with the Couch & Upholsterers, if that is the correct term.
We do know that my Grandfather Albert Edward and his brothers Charles James & Henry "Harry" George all went into the furniture business but "Harry" eventually became the Superintendent of the Brighton Crematorium/Cemetery and my Grandfather went to work for Gamages Furniture and left to become a Lay Preacher in the Plymouth Brethren.
In 1861, William Garrett, age 25 is shown as "Couch & Sofa Manufacturer" at 4 Back Church Lane, St. George in the East.
1871: at 34 "Couch Maker" at 9 New Street, Shoreditch.
Charles James inherited the company and it was eventually moved to 185 Central St., City Road, Bethnal Green, London.
My 2nd Cousin Christopher Paul Garrett now living in Shropshire HAS A PHOTO of the Company Building and also has one GARRETT CHAIR left by his Father Charles James. He tells me that the factory closed in 1942. WE don't know if the business died off due to the war or if it were hit by a bomb.
If anyone finds any information on John & Mary Garrett who were living in Woolwich in the late 1700s, it would be really appreciated.
William James Garrett was christened at St. Mary Magdalene Church of England in Woolwich in 1801.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH AGAIN. IT IS INTERESTING TO KNOW THAT THERE ARE STILL GARRETT CHAIRS AROUND.

IN ADDITION TO MY POSTING BELOW, I HAVE FOUND THAT MY GARRETT FAMILY WERE LIVING AT 2 UNION PLACE, CURTAIN ROAD, ST. LEONARDS, SHOREDITICH IN AUGUST OF 1845.
IN "CASALGUIDI'S" POSTING IT IS MENTIONED THAT THE FACTORY WAS AT 68-86 POWIS STREET AT CORNER OF UNION STREET BETWEEN 1905 & 1934.
NOT KNOWING ENGLAND THAT WELL, I AM WONDERING IF THIS WAS PART OF WOOLWICH IN 1845 BEFORE THEY AMALGAMATED WITH LONDON IN 1899.
