Infant Orphan Asylum, Wanstead, Essex
« on: Saturday 24 September 11 14:29 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any info on the Infant Orphan Asylum, Wanstead, Essex.  My GT Grandad George Lyster Cox and his 2 sisters are listed as being their in the 1881 census, I dont know why and would love to find out.  I understand the place closed a while ago and wonder whether there are any records which would show why they were admitted.  Thanks Sue

There's some info about the history of the Asylum here: http://www.royalwanstead.org.uk/history.html

I would imagine that surviving records would be at Essex Records Office:  http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/Default.asp
Chowns in Buckinghamshire
Broad, Eplett & Pope in St Ervan/St Columb Major, Cornwall
Browning & Moore in Cambridge, St Andrew the Less
Emms, Mealing & Purvey in Cotswolds, Gloucestershire
Barnes, Dunt, Gray, Massingham in Norfolk
Higho in London
Matthews & Nash in Whichford, Warwickshire
Smoothy, Willsher in Coggeshall & Chelmsford, Essex

Hi

The answer has been given in this post on the Essex board. Wanstead is in the London borough of Redbridge.
