I'm really not sure! Someone with better local knowledge would be best as I wouldn't like to misguide anyone. Don't know where Clonmany is in relation to Lettermacaward.

the two civil parishes are not that near to each other - see the maps on the Irish Times website :

  Clonmany Civil parish

  Lettermacward civil parish

Thank you.

The eviction was definitely Clonmany but no progress as yet finding out where Baughtair is. Not sure where if possible I could read the original article.

Hi I think you can be pretty sure that the house was located somewhere close to Urrismanagh as aghadowey stated, by the discription it would seem to be referring to Raghtin More the highest hill/mountain in the area.

The article gives the name of the family involved which is the biggest clue, Harry McDaid, wife and 6 children, there was a Henry McDaid living in the area who fits the bill, he was married to an Ellen, I see 3 baptisms for the family in Clonmany CP, I also see this Henry McDaid (now a widower) living at Letter, Dunaff recorded in the 1901 census

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Dunaff/Letter/1183712/

Letter, Dunaff is located halfway between Tullagh and Urrismanagh on the road at the foot of the mountain Ragtin More,

Baughtair may be simply a misspelling of bhóthair which is Irish for road

Regards

Joe

Thank you for this. Interesting the irish for "road" which is very similar.  The only thing is that Henry (Harry) and his wife Ellen only had 3/4 children by then and also in 1877 acccording to the land records he had just inherited a house and land in Roxtown from a Rose McDevitt (possible aunt or sister) .
What is interesting however is that Henry seems to have rented land in Letter and this reverted to the Diver family in 1881 but again this is before 1887 when the eviction was ????

If the above is the correct family here's a little more information:

(Had written this before your reply but still think it relevant)

Henry McDaid = Ellen O'Donnell 30/01/1876 Clonmany RC Church,(Henry was McDevitt on marriage record but McDaid in children's birth records)

Living at "Rockstown" for the birth of son John McDaid 1878, Rockstown I can see in old maps was in the next townland to Letter, Kinnea, Clonmany Parish, other births I have for the couple are James 1876,Bridget 1881 and Mary 1887.

It appears Rockstown is better known as Roxtown

I think this has to be the family (no other suitable family in the area)

Regards

Joe

One other thing if the families situation had taken a turn for the worst in the 1880's then some children may not have been registered as registration cost money, big gap between birth in 1881 and birth in 1887

Thank you again. Yes this is my family. I have all the same info for you except the birth of Bridget I have in 1891.  What I cant understand is if they were evicted from Roxtown , why Henry is shown on the land records form 1877 until 1926 when henry passed the land ( probably dead) to his son john ?? Obviously there is only limited info in this newspaper article but the land records are quite clear . Oh dear a bit difficult????????
