« on: Friday 23 September 11 18:49 BST (UK) »
Can any one tell me where the "foot of Baughtair" is in Donegal in 1887. A harry Mcdaid , his wife and six children were evicted from there , but i cannot find it on any map.  Thank you

The eviction is mentioned here and gives several clues as to the area- village of Clonmany, Tullagh and Urrismaud [Urrismanagh] are all mentioned as is the landlord R.B. Harvey.

If you go to Google Maps and ask for directions from Clonmany to Tullagh to Urrismanagh and click on terrain option you'll see that the route follows the bottom of the mouth which is called Raghtin More.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

It's quite possible that there is a mis-print in the original newspaper article or that the scanning software has not correctly read the place.

Hi, the evictions took place on the estate of R.B Harvey, and seem to be have centred round the village/Parish of Clonmany, Donegal, the placename you are referring to is taken from this article I presume:

 http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=NZT18870415.2.28&l=mi&e=-------10--1----0--

The area round Clonmany is quite mountainous , I presume that Baughtair was a name given at that time to one of these hills/mountains, the family were living at "the foot" of this hill, don't see any reference to it on any contemporary map or even old OS maps from the 19C, I have a friend who spent his childhood in the area, I'll ask him the next time I see him if the name rings a bell.

Regards

Joe

Wonder if it is Ba Uachtair (which is the Gaelic for Boyoughter).

Lettermacaward (civil parish), Barony of Boylagh.
