Mary Cullen ne Cheeseman on the census
« on: Friday 23 September 11 18:06 BST (UK) »
Good afternoon  ;D

I seem to of hit another brick wall. I cant find the right census records!

My 5x great grandmother was Mary Cullen ne Cheeseman, she married William Cullen on the 24 Dec 1817 in Canterbury kent.

They think they had about 7 children, All born in the Canterbury area. One of those being my 4x great grandmother. They were:
Mary Cheeseman Cullen abt.1817
William abt.1818
Elizabeth abt.1820
Henry abt.1822
Eliza Ann Maria Cullen abt.1824
Eliza abt.1828
William John Cullen abt.1831

So far I have been unable to find Mary and William Cullen on the Census records. As their first child was born about 1817, and they were married in 1817, unless it was a remarriage or something I think William and Mary would of been born around the 1790's (maybe give or take 10 years) So I believe they would of been around on the 1841 census and the 1851 (Unless they both died quite young). I'm interested in finding out where both Mary and William were born and what year. However as I haven't yet found the census I'm stuck at a dead end :(

Mary Cullen CHEESEMAN was baptised 22nd Dec 1816, St Paul, Canterbury.  Base born of Mary

I don't have access to the censuses, but there's only one Mary CHEESEMAN baptised roughly the right time, 16th April 1784, St Dunstan, parents John & Sarah.
Hopefully someone will be along soon to do the census lookup, & we'll know if that baptism is likely, or not ;D

Thank you Betty, for finding that baptism! I had been searching for hours with no luck, I didn't even think to search Mary Cullen as a first name, and Cheeseman as a surname. Silly me! Looks like Mary was born out of wedlock and took her mothers surname originally and her fathers as a middle name, but then at some point it got swapped over. Very interesting to know!

As for the 1851 census, if that is William and Mary, it's taken me by suprise! I really wouldn't of expected them to turn up in Poplar.

Something that has been playing on my mind, is the Possibility of Mary being the daughter of John Cheeseman and Flora, that Mary Cheeseman was born about 1796 in Hawkhurst, kent. But because of the distance from Canterbury I can't quite tie her in.

Hi

Going out on a limb a little -

As William Cullen born 1831 is shown on 1881CR as a Master Mariner living at Ramsgate how about this for his father -

William Cullen son on Ric Cullen and Alice baptized at Folkestone in 1793 and buried there 1837 but residence given as Calais, France! (IGI)
It would explain him missing all CRs and possibly other members of the family living over there?
A closer alternative than Poplar.

I think I may of come across this Mary Cheeseman and her marriage to William during my search, but so far that is nothing i've been able to connect to my tree.
My Mary Cheeseman had a illigitamate child one year before her marriage. On the baptism she named the child Mary Cullen Cheeseman, then a year later a marriage pops up of a marriage between a Mary Cheeseman and William Cullen. There may be a connection between our Marys somewhere, maybe as a distant cousin but so far I haven't found anything :(

Thank you for finding that! I'll note this down and have a look into it. I haven't yet had much of a look into the Cullens yet - Going to take a shot at that now  :P
