It's a common name. What's the source of the date & place information, and when & where was he later in life?

We want to be reasonably sure that we are on the right track, so all extra snippets help.

Wife born "Missouri" and all children born USA so presume marriage in the states?
If so you need to get a copy of that as it will give you more details.

If William Clarke was born 07 Oct 1866, Manchester, England, then I'd expect his birth to be registered in the December quarter of 1866. I've tried searching Lancashire, December 1866, births on FreeBMD using just:
Surname: Cla*
Forename(s): +W

Which should return any child registered with a first or second name begining with a 'W' and a surname begining with Cla...

Assuming William Clarke's birth was registered and also that the informant gave the correct date and place of birth when his death was registered, then unless I've missed something or he's been mis-transcribed, I can't see a birth registration in or around the Manchester area for him  There's one possible birth registered in Manchester but it's in the March quarter of 1867 - could be a late registration???

Maybe someone else could try?
