Price Family
« on: Friday 23 September 11 12:23 BST (UK) »
Am attempting to find out details about Joseph Price, born 26 September 1848 died 28 August 1926.  Died in New Zealand, married Mary Jane Millard, unknown as to where he was born but I believe his father was Thomas.  Mary Jane and Joseph were married on 31 October 1878 in Waimea West and had four sons Alfred, Robert, Norman and Wallace.  I don't have a name of his mother.

Hopefully this will get you on your way:

Joseph Price was the son of Nelson Colonist, Thomas Price.  It appears that Thomas Price arrived in New Zealand prior to 7 Oct 1843. Nelson Examiner and New Zealand Chronicle, 7 October 1843, Page 330.  Arrived. 4th, brigantine Star of China, 112, Ward, from Wellington; general cargo. Passengers, Mr. Perry, Mr. Price, Mr. Dorter, and two in the steerage. (The Star of China came either from or via Sydney, AU)  (Also, a Millard, possibly the father of Joseph's wife, was a Nelson Colonist)

Birth reg for Joseph:  1848/374 Price Joseph

By 1852 Thomas Price aquired a land grant at Waimea South.  In 1862 he starts appearing in newspapers, along with his sons Thomas Jr. and Joseph.  In a 1864 news article Thomas states that he is a servant to Captain Blundell and he owns land in Waimea West.

PapersPast has other articles about the marriages of his children, deaths, etc.  I suggest you enter these exact search terms "Thomas Price" "Waimea West" with the parens around them, and choose Articles as the content type. Then do a search changing the name to "Joseph Price"

Thomas Price was married to Mary Ann, who died 14 Sep 1870, age 59 at Waimea West. (gives a birth year of about 1811)

Thomas Price died 15 Aug 1886 at Waimea West, age 83 years (gives a birth year of about 1803).  He and Mary Ann were buried at St Michaels Cemetery (St Michaels Anglican Church), Waimea West

Hi Jessies Mum, I am a g.g grandaughter of Thomas and Mary Ann Price (Brown) through their first child William, who was born in July in Liverpool in 1842, just before they emigrated on the "Indus" in December 1842 - Arriving in Nelson in Feb. 1843.
Thomas and Mary Ann were married in Derby in 1840 and appear in the 1841 census.
Joseph (and the rest of their children) was born in Waimea West, NZ. I have Joseph recorded as being born in 1848.
I haven't really delved into Joseph's info but I am in contact with two men here in Nelson who are descended from Joseph. (I'm pretty sure)
Let me know if I can be of any further help.

Cheers
Diane

Dear Diane, Thank you so very much for your posting on here - fantastic news that I obviously didn't have previously which is just awesome.  It is Joseph (and ultimately his wife and family) who I am tracing to get as much information on as possible.  Any information you are able to direct me towards would be so very much appreciated.
