Moyles family
« on: Tuesday 20 September 11 19:58 BST (UK) »
Hi there, I'm new to this but my mom was a Moyles before she married, she came from Derreen, Ballina. She was born 1923 and was one of 10 children to Michael Moyles & Kate Moyles (nee Barrett) who lived on a farm. I don't have much information about my grandparents, great grandparents etc so would welcome any advice or information.

Welcome to rootschat, Midnight Lady  :D

It is best if you say what information you do have to prevent unnecessary searching or duplication of information.
However, I think your Michael's parents and family are here in 1901 - as Myles

1901 census

Elsewhere on internet, I saw that some of Michael's siblings emigrated to Scranton - was that your post?

If you don't have these census details already, you can also get 1911 at the same site.

Is this the kind of thing you are after?

Also, may I just add that names of living people should not be posted here - I notice that you haven't done so which is good- thanks.

regards
heywood

Thankyou for the information so far. i did make a start on tracing my family a couple of years ago but did not get very far. I cannot remember if I posted about my grandfathers siblings emigrating to Scranton but the research I had done did indicate this was the case. However as the info I have just looked at shows a change of spelling to the surname Moyles/Myles it is probably better that i start again from scratch and yes I do believe that you have found my grandfather on the 1901/1911 census. I would like to get some information on my grandmother and her family as according to my mother she died aged about 50 and it was always too painful for her to talk about. I have surnames that my mother told me were relatives such as Tolan, Barrett but nothing else.

Family Search has Irish civil records index

- although I can't pinpoint a marriage for Moyles/Barrett. It involves finding one and then cross referencing.

You should be able to find Kate Barrett (was she also Catherine?- need to check) in census now.

The marriage certificate would help to confirm the fathers' names of Michael and Kate.

According to 1911 census, John and Bridget Moyles were married 40 yrs so their marriage should also be in civil registration as it would be post 1864.

Hi, this is a possibility but I found a Kate Barrett in the 1911 census who lived next door to Michael Moyles in Derreen so I was wondering if my mother had the full facts re:Lahardane.
It seems my grandfather was listed as Myles in the 1901 census but then his and his family name was changed to Moyles in the 1911 census so I will have to look at both.
I would guess that my grandparents married around 1920 going by the ages of their children, I do not know if my grandmother was known as Catherine but wouldn't rule it out, I have next to no information on her or her family.

Myles/Moyles may just have been an interpretation by the person who completed the census form.
The emigrants to USA on Ellis Island site are entered as Moyles around the same time.

There is the Kate in Derreen but I just thought that I would mention the other one.
I can't see the marriage  :-\

There is a Michael Moyles and Mary Barrett with the same reference marriage 1925, Ballina   :-\ but both names are probably common to the area.

Do you have birth certificates for any of the children - particularly those born early in the marriage.
