Joseph Payne died 1857 - a puzzle
« on: Tuesday 20 September 11 04:33 BST (UK) »
Hello

Just wondering if anyone can offer some advice on how to locate the death details for Joseph Payne.

Joseph, a basket maker, was born in Braybrooke, Northamptonshire in 1837 and married Ann Underwood on the 14 May 1857 at All Saints Church, Leicester. Ann & Joseph had a son, William, the same year.  By the 1861 census Ann is a widow living with her parents and young son William. I have discovered a Joseph Payne, aged 21, of St Peter's Lane, All Saints who was buried at Welford Cemetery on Oct 28 1857 (plot no: uN839C). I am sure this must be him but here starts my problem: I can find no trace of his death certificate - even GRO has returned my money as they cannot find anything when they did an open search.

There is 1 other Joseph Payne who dies in Oct-Dec 1857 in Northamptonshire. At first I purchased this certificate too, just in case it was my Joseph for some reason being back in his birth county, but no - this turned out to be a 5 year old boy.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how I might get to the bottom of proving that the Joseph Payne buried at Welford is mine and how to get information on how he died? He is my 3rd great grandfather and so I would really like to find out more.

Many thanks
Deb

What was their address on William's birth cert?
If that was St Peters Lane, that would be another link, indicating this is the right burial.

I wonder if the death for some reason never made its way to the GRO index.

modified to add -
Just had a look at the actual image for th page for PAyne in the indexes for Oct/Nov/Dec 1857

There are 2 Joseph Paynes
One died Peterbrough ref I think is 3b 144
the other Worcestor, ref I think is 6c 196
The writing is not very clear.
HAve you ruled both of these out?
He may not have been at home when he died.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Thank you for your replies Lizdb & Annie65115.

Unfortunately Joseph was the first in the plot and the next 2, who were buried 23 years later, aren't related.

I have ordered William's birth certificate to see what address turns up. I should have that in 2 weeks time, hopefully.

I hadn't picked up on the Worcester Joseph. I may do an open search with GRO to check if he's the right age and then go from there. The Peterborough one you reference lizdb is the 5 year old boy called Joseph Payne, so that one is ruled out.

Would you know whether there is any way of getting copies of grave inscriptions? Not sure if it was common to add 'husband of ....' or perhaps I'm being too hopeful. Do you know if Welford Cemetery offer a look up facility like that?

Thanks again for your help.

You could contact the Friends of Welford Rd to ask, but I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope - although there are lots of headstones in the cemetery, there are an awful lot of unmarked graves (or stones that have gone missing) as well.
