Raven / Dugan
« on: Monday 19 September 11 18:04 BST (UK) »
Hi,
as with lots of Irish family history searches, I have hit a wall. In the 1810s, Michael Dugan (or Dougan, Dhugan, Doogan amongst other variants I have found) and his wife Catherine, maiden name Raven were born. On census returns in ENgland, they say they were born in Bottradon and Dareybrode respectively. Of course, neither of these exist. COuld it be Portadown? We thought from passed on messages through the family it might be Moy and also County Mayo as their son said in the 1911 census.
Can anyone offer any suggestions as to where they may have come from or indeed any marriage lines?
ANy assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Travlet

Could you given us the census references where you found these places- might be easier for us to sort out this puzzle.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi.
1861 census, for Measham, reg. district - Ashby-de-la-zouch
Ed, institution or vessel - 8
Household schedule number - 50
Piece - 2267
Folio - 86
Page number 9

I have spoken to someone else who is on with this with me and Raven may possibly be Reagan or Ragin, as the 1851 census has them as Dudan, not Dugan (too many similarities with children, names and DofBs) and having cousins living with them named Ragin - Reagan.
Hope this helps,
Travlet

This doesn't help you much but is interesting.
Looking at the censuses for people born Ireland in Measham, they seem to be a discrete group.
1851 - 'Dudans' and 'Ragans' are 9 of the 11 Irish people.

1857 marriage between Barney Ragin and Biddey Dugin

1861 has another family of Dugans in addition - 'Killa Maver' as birthplace - looks more like 'Drilla..'and Bryan and Bridget (Barney and Biddey) have 'Killa Moore' as transcriptions.
They do look as though they have 'vee' at the end which makes me wonder is it Kilmovee, County Mayo?

1881 - The Regans have Castlebar, Mayo
1891 Bridget Dughan  - Balagadereen - Ballaghaderreen was Mayo is now Roscommon and is near to Kilmovee.

I have just looked at Measham  - not for any family members moving away.
