trying to trace my Grandmother's birth certificate.
« on: Monday 19 September 11 16:00 BST (UK) »
I am searching for the birth of May Cairns, born around 1900.  Her parents names were John and Margaret Cairns  The mothers maiden surname is not clear on the certificate it looks like Hynes?  I have a copy of May's marriage certificate from 1921. The marriage took place in Port Glasgow, May lived in Greenock, Scotland.  May married an Alexander McLaughlan.  I have not also been able to trace a marriage for John and Margaret.  I have tried to upload a copy to attach to this message the image is too big.  If anybody knows of any information I would appeciate it.   :)
Cairns, McLaughlan, McDonald, Haggerty, Hynes,
McNeilly, Ferguson, Stewart.      Port Glasgow, Greenock, Ireland.

Welcome to Rootschat but you're only allowed to attach a small portion of a certificate for deciphering purposes.

Have you searched for the family in Scottish census records yet? that might help see if all the family were born in Scotland.

You probably already know this but Scottish birth certificates list date and place of parents' marriage. Also, May is sometimes a nickname (Mary, Mary Ann, etc.) so May could be registered with another Christian name.

Thank you for your reply.  I have tried other christian names.  I also searched the English BMD records for a birth.  May Cairn's parents were deceased in 1921 according to May's marriage certificate.   May's parents died between 1900-1921  I searched for death certificates to see if I could even trace the family in this way to no avail.

Have you tried census records yet? that might be the way to get more details so you have a better chance of finding them in other Scottish records.

Hi mclaughlan
have you had a look through the inverclyde BMD's
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0dam/
there are quite a few Cairns on there,
and if you could put the portion of the certificate with the mothers maiden name
maybe someone will be able to decipher it

Thanking you for all your help,  I have looked in Inverclyde's BMD index.  The birth of Mother in Northumberland was Adelaide, were mine was  Margaret.  I actually purchased the certificate from Scotland's People.  The father's name matches.  Many thanks again.  :)

hi mclaughlan
you say you have a copy of May and Alexanders marriage cert
and that the marriage took place in Port Glasgow ?
I have done a general search on SP and the only marriage I can see for this
couple 1921 took place in Greenock,
what was the address of the family on the marriage cert it may help narrow them down a bit.
I have been doing some research of my own this week on the Cairns name
I have been trying to find info on some siblings of a Mary Cairns, I dont know if they
were related to yours or not,the ones I am researching seemed to move around a lot and     (Cairns is quite a common name) which makes it difficult
but from some notes I have made
there is an Marriage for a John Cairns  to a Margaret Adams in 1893 in Midlothian
and there is a birth of a May Cairns 1900 in Berwick
these are from doing general searches on SP
just thought I would post them in case it helps you

Hi the marriage took place 19Th August 1921  is theirs that you found, just checked certificate and it is Greenock that the marriage took place,at Ladyburn Manse.  The groom's family lived in Port Glasgow.  May Cairns residence was 8 Chalmers Street, Greenock.   I have also seen this street spelt Chalmers?   All I know about my grandmother's past is this marriage certificate.  May and her husband Alexander McLaughlan had a daughter called Mary that was born in 1923.  I have no idea if my Grandmother May had any siblings.  I tried to cut the size down of the wedding certificate to see if I could upload it onto here, even after sizing it down it was still too big. Regards
