hello h,

if the death was in england or wales you will need to visit the probate office in london.

you can obtain a copy by post from the sub-registry in york.

an application form can be downloaded at www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/HMCSCourtFinder/

The above refers to wills and probate from 1858 onwards and this is a new link for postal applications and searches as the offices have been moved from York to Leeds:
http://www.justice.gov.uk/guidance/courts-and-tribunals/courts/probate/copies-of-grants-wills.htm

Prior to 1858 it is slightly more complicated and we would need more information to be able to point you in the right direction.

They just like to confuse us Tony  ::)  They also didn`t alter the various websites immediately after they hiked up the cost to £6.  Perhaps they just don`t want us to find and use them  ;D

Ancestry host the calendars from 1868 to 1941 minus a few years.

After 1942 you'll have to make enquiries elsewhere.

The probate dept at Holborn and the district sub registries hold a complete set of calendars from 1858 to date. There are also partial sets at some regional archives and libraries.

Do you have a name and date of death you want checking?

The National archives hold all the PCC wills from before 1858 and you can look up and get these online for a payment.
