Ida Ferentz born abt 1865
« on: Sunday 18 September 11 21:55 BST (UK) »
Ida Ferentz is on Southampton 1871 census as born Antigua.  On the 1881 census she is a 16year old servant in Croydon, Surrey says born Portugal.
Parents = Francis Ferentz and Sarah Ann nee Wren.  1871 census Francis says born "Maidam british subject", on his marriage 1862 he says father Francis Ferentz, labourer.  Ida married a John Moss and lived in London, she died 1952.  Cant find marriage to a Mr Moss.  Family lore says she spoke Portugese.  Looked at online history of Antigua which says large number of Portugese arrived in 1840, Francis was born 1841.  Does anyone know where Maidam is?  Any help appreciated

You mention the 71 and 81 census - Have you found her on the 91, 01, and 11 censii...This may give a time frame for a marriage. :)

Working back:- there is a marriage of John W Moss 1917 to Ida Woodbury.

Ida Woodbury is on the 1911 as a 38 year old widow born "City St John West Indies" & is listed as Portugese

On the 1901 Ida Woodbury is on Guernsey as the 36 year old wife of William (he's from Guernsey) born West Indies a British subject. I can't see a marriage to William in England & Wales - perhaps Guernsey? It is possible this isn't a first marriage for her.....

My gut feeling is that Ida Woodbury is nee Ida Ferentz - I haven't found her on 1891 (William Woodbury is 19 & single), nor her father in 1881 or 1891 (he dies 1899) On 1881 Sarah says she is "wife of steward Royal Mail". I think Ancestry have some Post Office records - perhaps you may find a mention there?

Dear Mshrmh thank you so very much for your help - absolutely fantastic.
Didnt think of looking at Channel Islands census.  Should now be able to get printouts and a marriage certificate for her.
I had not been able to find Ida on 1891, 1901 or 1911 census.  Her father Francis was as you say a ships steward but I've checked the post office employment records on Ancestry and couldnt find him.  He must have been at sea at the time of the 1881 and 1891 census and, as you say, died in 1899 being knocked down and run over in Southampton docks.
Again, many thanks, Enamay

I was googling the name Francis Ferentz, and found a reference to a Francis Ferentz who was stationed at a Fort in Maidam in Afghanistan.

Could this have been the father of your Francis Ferentz?  It is an unusual name and the reference to this name and Maidam may be more than a coincidence?

I know it may seem obscure, but sometimes there can be a useful connection.
