VANCES Buildings Mansion House 1900s
« on: Saturday 17 September 11 09:53 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any pictures of the Vance's buildings in Mansion house in Dublin from 1901 until they were no longer there? I was told as a child they were slums and people that lived there were very poor. My great grandmother gave birth to my grandma in the Vance's buildings mansion house bishop street in 1918. Would love to see a photo or find some information about the family's that lived there.

Whilst most of the buildings on that street appear to be Tenements, number 13 seems to be a single house, and has your Byrne family as the only occupants.

See the building return : Form B1

That address existed in 1869, so you may find a photo earlier than 1901.

The Irish law times and solicitors' journal: Volume 3 - Page 592
1869
"Smyth, John James, 2, Vance's Buildings, Bishop-street, Dublin ; previously of Shamrock-villa, Harold s-cross, county Dublin, writing clerk and warehouseman. Petition filed 8th September, 1869. Hearing at the Four Courts, 10th November"

"11099 Private Daniel BYRNE. 1st Battalion Killed in action 15th June 1915.. Age 22. Twelve Tree Copse Cemetery - Turkey.Born Dublin. Enlisted Dublin. Son of Mary Byrne, of 6, Vances Buildings, Bishop St., Dublin. Gallipoli Medal card gives KIA 15 June 1915"

My father and my grandfather came from Vances buildings. Kevin Farrell and William Farrell, We don't know much about them, but are hoping to find a little out about them, I was wondering did you have to go under an arch to get into Vances building's.

Stephen Mahon aged 59 died at #6 VANCE'S BUILDINGS in January 1915: see genealogy.ie civil records. He was born 1856 to William Mahon and Catherine Wilde (not Cullen?) and baptised at St-Nicholas RC, Francis St: see genealogy.ie church records. He married Catherine Tierney in 1878 at St-Kevin's RC, Harrington St.
