Sarah Hall
« on: Friday 16 September 11 22:16 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the status of Sarah Chapman when she married Robert Pinner in 1875 at King's Lynn, Norfolk.  Sarah's maiden name was Hall and she was born in the county of Durham.  In 1853 she married Benjamin Alfred Chapman in Scarborough, Yorkshire.

The 1871 census shows her as housekeeper to Robert Pinner in King's Lynn.  Also with her were her 6 children, the last one Bessy being 3 months old.  I have been unable to find a death record of her husband Benjamin and wonder if she was a widow or had split from her husband.

The 1881 census shows her being married to Robert.  Bessy who was listed as Chapman in 1871 is now listed as Pinner.  Another 3 daughters have been born.

Any help with solving this would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Pat

This is the 1871 entry for Norfolk - all children surname Chapman and all shown as b Lynn Norfolk

Robert Pinner 32 b Harling Suffolk
Sarah Chapman  36 b Wolshing Durham - widow - housekeeper
Robert   15
Lydia Chapman 14
Ann Chapman 11
William R Chapman 8
John T Chapman 6
Bessy Chapman 3 Months

This is a possible 1861 census entry for Accrington Lancs

Robert Chapman 36 b Norfolk Elenham
Sarah   26 b Woollingham Durham
Lydia   3 b      ditto
Ann   1 b Yorkshire Ebsley
RG9 Piece 3063 Folio 122 Page 39

To look up a marriage in parish registers - you have to know which church it took place in.

These are the areas which were covered by the Kings Lynn Registration District

Here are the baptisms for Bessie, Fanny, Violet and Agnes

 https://www.familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11106-18251-86?cc=1416598&wc=658490

looks like only Agnes was born after Sarah married Robert Pinner

If the family CaroleW posted in the 1861 census is correct then I wonder if Sarah Hall (born Durham) married Robert Chapman  and not Benjamin Chapman

There is this marriage:
Dec Q 1856
Sarah Hall
Robert Chapman
Weardale  10a 294

The 1861 census shows Lydia as being born in Durham and there is this  birth reg:

Lydia Chapman
June Q 1858
Weardale 10a 218

and then could the family have then moved to Yorkshire?

Many thanks Carole W and Baby Boy.  After searching, the correct name was Robert Chapman.  The census for Lancashire also now makes sense.  I think that Sarah and her children moved to Norfolk after she was widowed and took up the post of housekeeper with Robert Pinner whom she later married.

The baptism records of the Pinner children were helpful as they confirmed the parents.  I have the birth certificate of the youngest Pinner daughter Alice born in King's Lynn, Norfolk and have now been able to confirm who she married and found her descendants.

Again, thanks.
