Hi,
I have been researching my husband’s family tree and had “lost” his great grandmother between the UK censuses of 1871 and 1891.
Her name is LOUISA HARRIET HANKS born 1860. In 1871 she is living in Bristol, Somerset, UK (where she was born) and is with her Aunt. In 1891, she is in Birkenhead (just across the River Mersey from Liverpool) but her name is now given as ABBIE L TEARE, widow.
From this information, I can only deduce that some time between 1871 and 1891 she married a member of the Teare family and “gained” the name “Abbie”.
Recently, quite by accident, I found in the US Census of 1880
Name: ABBIE L. TEARR
Residence: EAST CHESTER, WESTCHESTER, NEW YORK
Birthdate: 1861
Birthplace: England
Relationship to Head: Other
Ethnicity (Standardized): American
Martial Status: Married
Age: 19 years
And
Name: FREDERICK TEARR
Residence: East Chester, Westchester, New York
Birthdate: 1845
Birthplace: Isle of Man
Relationship to Head: Other
Ethnicity (Standardized): American
Martial Status: Married
Age: 35 years
Occupation: Engineer
They are listed as living with Richard & Charlotte Earles and their family.
I am wondering if anyone can help me expand on this information or advise me on where I can look.
My questions are:
How and when did Abbie & Frederick arrive in the US?
Were they married before they went out there (I haven’t been able to find any record), were they married on-board ship or were they married when they got to the US?
Is there any record of them being naturalised?
Also, when and where did Frederick die?
If anyone can help with any of the above or suggest where I should look, I would be most grateful. I am completely new to research in the US.
Thanks,
Jenet4
