Tremaine (Tremayne) Illogan Downs Cornwall
« on: Friday 16 September 11 12:03 BST (UK) »
I am searching for descendants of my great-great grandparents: William Tremaine (Tremayne) b:1813. St Minver Cornwall, d:3.4.1886 Illogan Downs Cornwall. Married 30.9.1837 Elizabeth Mitter, b:1817 St. Kew, d: 4.11.1888 Illogan Downs Cornwall.

I have found 13 children for this couple.

Caroline b. 1838, Jane 1839, Ann 1841, William 1842,(emigrated to Tasmania. Australia with Robert) John 1844, Thomas 1845, Susan 1847, Mary Ann 1849, Edward 1850, Robert 1853 (emigrated to Tasmania. Australia, my great-great grandfather), Catherine 1855, Elizabeth Ann 1857, Philippa 1859 and Temperance 1861. (Temperance is thought to have emigrated to South Africa working at Government House, may have married, her surname then being Cook.

I wondered if any of this family excluding William and Robert tried their fortunes in South Africa

If anyone is a descendant of this family and would like to share their ancestors story I would be interested to hear from you.

Regards,

Vallie.

Hi Mannering,

Thank you for your reply to my post.

I have traced the Tremayne family back to Anne Tremaine born Padstow 4.7.1658.  Her son Michael born 1680 Padstow.  Died 9.12.1748 St. Minver. I assume he was illegitimate as Michael was given Anne's surname Tremaine.

I am interested in your ancestor Jane, her husband, family and her life also her descendants.

I am also interested in the other children of William and Elizabeth, some I have sourced through searching records, others just disappeared.  I assume they may have emigrated as did our ancestor William and my great grandfather Robert.

I thought others may have followed Temperance the youngest to South Africa, however they may have tried Canada or U.S.A.

Any photos of your ancestor Jane and her husband you may have, any information on William and Elizabeth or their other children, is what I am searching for.

I have researched the family tree and have all the generations back to Michael, son of Anne as I said.

You may have or know things about the Tremayne family that I don't, as living in Australia I could only search records.  The people who would have known, :) such as my great grandfather are long gone of course.

Regards,

Vallie

Vallie .

You have done very well indeed going back to 1658 we have got a lot of information between us that is for sure ,maybe we should write direct to each other as your GGrandfather and my GGrandmother were brother and Sister which makes you and I first cousins . I live in Cornwall UK not far from Illogan Downs and often visit the churchyard where our Ancesters are buried but unfortunately there are no headstones on the graves of our GGGrandparents and I do not have a location for it .However I do know the location of the grave of  their daughter Jane and her husband Joseph who were my GGrandparents . I am interested to know if you can shed some light on the mystery surrounding their oldest child Caroline born 1838 never married and was bought up by her Grandparents and later her Uncles and cousins on the Mitter side of the family in Pendoggett Village Cornwall ,it seems this child was not bought up alongside her parents or her siblings Check out the 1841 Census for Illogan place name Merrose .

Regards .

Hi Mannering,

If you wish to correspond directly.  Send me your email address.

I do know  about Caroline Tremaine.  However the information I have was uncovered by another relative not by myself.

Vallie.

With reference to Tremayne family in Padstow.  I have a copy of a will of a John Tremayne who died in Creed Cornwall in 1611 where his brother George Tremayne of Padstow is mentioned.  This family is linked to the Tremayne line in Constantine. :)

I assume he was illegitimate as Michael was given Anne's surname Tremaine.

Hi Vallie,

Just some advice in this regard, the fact that he had his mother might not mean he is illegitimate in the true sense of his parents not being married as many children where deemed illegitimate in  baptisms in the early years if they were married by a judge and not a priest, and if the surname carried onto the next generation it is also possible that the family were married in a Christian sect that the state did not recognize. This means the parents could be Catholic (Which for a period did not have their births recognized) or as it was the 1600s it is possible they were puritans who were also not recognized by the Church of England and hence the State.

Or he could just be illegitimate in which case you should look up the petty case records (bastardy records) for the district he was born to see if his mother or the parish sued the father to support the child because if the father did not the parish did.

Hope you have some luck in this regard

Duncan

I have found the following at the National Archives.  Not sure if it related to your Tremaine family, but could be worth exploring.  I suggest that, if you wish to obtain copies of the information, you do so through eggsa.org

Hope this helps.
