Sidney Ransom b 1876 Pimlico     Artist
Ena Ransom wife b 1874  Basingstoke   Actress
Doreen Ransom dau b 1894  Clapham

Living at 49 Crewdson Rd, Lambeth

RG13     420     146    48

Sidney and Ena's occupations match exactly with what you've told us. So does the name of their child.

Possible marriage in June Qtr 1893 Lambeth Volume 1d page 879
A Sidney Ransom and Ena Lewis appear on the same page.

This also fits, because it introduces the name Lewis into the equation and perhaps explains why Sidney Ransom was also (according to google) known as Sidney Lewis-Ransom.

An 1893 marriage would also 'fit' with the apparent birthdate of the child on the census - c. 1893/94

BUT this can't be the Sidney you refer to, because it makes him only 12 when he married  ::)

At the moment I'm going round in circles I'm afraid.

Looks as though it is time to buy a copy of the marriage certificate if the details are not available online.

A Sidney RANSOM born 25 February 1881 was employed amongst the electrical and power staff of the Midland Railway (though based in London) between 24 Oct 1901 and 18 June 1908.  He is said to have been previously employed as an electrician with the P&O S.N. Co (or similar - hard to read).

I see that the Sidney who was in Wandsworth in 1881 was 1 month old - could his future have been as electrician rather than dramatist?

NB there is also a Sidney RANSOM of the same sort of age (b abt 1881) who seems to have gone into Holy Orders and then become a theosophical lecturer in places including South Africa, Australia and India.

That's interesting;  it's looking likely that the Sidney born 1881 is not the artist sought by the OP.

Nanny Jan you feel tht you are going in circles with Sidney Lewis Ransom - Im spinning in circles!!
I previously doubted the Halgena Lewis connection but that record matched so well with what we knew about him. It is so easy to accept Halgena Lewis and Doreen Ransom but like you say it is time to nail them down with evidence of my supposition. The Marriage Certificate will be the first port of call.
Thank you for all you have done. Your time and effort is much appreciated. This would have to be the best site that I have ever used.

Please post the details when you get the marriage certificate; he's an intriguing character.   ;)

The details of his father will probably be accurate but Sidney might be "flexible" about his age.   I have a few ladies in my tree who adjusted their age when marrying a younger man.   ::)

Jen B...SLR was born 4 March 1881 in Wandsworth,Surrey. I doubt he was ever an electrican. In fact I have a lot of data on his theatrical career. His plays were staged at Terry's Theatre, Prince of Wales theatre and the London Times reviewed his plays. He wrote The Great Red Frog a childrens story and The Flame a book of poetry for adults. He was also known as an artist. He designed the front cover of The Poster and was known to design playbills and theatre posters. Yes, you are right he sometimes styled himself as Lewis-Ransom and Mosnar Yendis (his name spelt backwards).
Thank you to everyone who has tried to help and searched records for me. There are a number of Sidney Ransom's but mine is definately Sidney Lewis Ransom.
