Hi  I found a picture of my 3G Grandparents Gravestone on www.oddquine.co.uk. I wonder if anyone can decipher word after Farmer. Thanks Jon

Sorry despite my best efforts and about an hour scrutinising this I can't  read it - I think I have found them in the 1841 census (in the hope of their address???) Neil is with Margaret and children Christian, Janet, James and George. I thought that the word might be the name of the farm they worked but the image of the census is not available on ancestry yet....sorry - nearest I can get is ?R--L-TS

I was wondering if it was a place name I havn't been able to come up with anything. The only child I am aware of is daughter Christina. She married John Mackay and had a croft on the Stirkoke Estate. Thanks very much for your time and effort. Jon

Hi, Jon, this could be the name of the farm rather than a village.  Have you seen on the Oddiquine site at the top that you can email Oddquine and they will send you a larger copy of the photo.  Might be worth asking him if he knows the name.
I looked at all places within 5 miles of Wick to see if one of them 'jumped' out at me, but no luck.
Failing that, have you got a copy of the death certificate from Scotlandspeople.gov.uk ? This will give the place of death.  It is a pay per view site but well worth the money.

Just to add my two pen'orth in this.

I read the last four letters as 'LATE'.  I found Loch Scarmclate not too far from Wick.  I am trying to find any village ending 'clate' if it helps.

Unfortunately, Neil Stewart's death is before the start of official registration in Scotland from 1855. There may be an entry perhaps on the Old Parish Registers for burial/mort cloth hire etc.

The family's 1841 census (from FreeCen) shows them living at Stirkoke, Wick. Not sure if this helps though with the place name a few years later.

I have just found Oliclate Farm at Wick.  They are now poultry and game farmers.

...Possibility for place name may be a spelling variant of Ohelate/Ollaclate etc. in Wick.

I think young George who shows with the famiy in 1841 (son or grandson?) looks to be working there as a farm servant in 1851 (again available on FreeCen).
