Irish Volunteers in South Africa?

My G Grandfather, Daniel Flynn, is listed on 1881 UK census as born in Ireland, and has the occupation of Staff Sargeant, Irish Volunteers.  His 2 oldest children were born in Capetown (1862 & 1865).  On his death certificate he is listed as Army pensioner, 10th Foot. I think he was from Westmeath so is this an Irish regiment or a British one? So far I have been unable to find out anything about it , and why it was in S. Africa in the 1860s. Any  info or pointer will be much appreciated.

This will tell you about the 10th Foot but they were not an Irish Regiment, it seems 8)
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Thank you, Hackstaple, for your reply which pointed in me in the right direction albeit by a rather circuitous route.
I apologise for the delay in replying but I took a break from all this for a month or so.
The 10th rgt of foot (The Royal Lincolnshire) raised a 2nd battalion in Ireland in 1858 which was in S Africa during the right period for my family history.
My new question is would I be able to find any birth or marriage details from my GGF's army record, and what info would I need to get hold of this?  I will be in the UK next month and might be able to squeeze in a visit to the GRO.Thanks again.

carolyn,you are looking for two units,volunteers are the old territorial army,10th foot was regular army,there was nothing going on in SA in the 1860s so he was probably on garrison duties,you may find ref to him in the ecclisiastical returns for that period,not sure where they are,i think they may be at the family records centre,mack
military history,mainly ww1,manchester pals battalions,tyneside irish +tyneside scottish brigades,leeds,liverpool,accrington,birmingham,hull,barnsley,swansea and salford pals.

CarolynP,some good people on this site found one of mine in Anglesey Barrack,Portsea 1881.That's as far as I was able to go,as a ref;to Birr Barrack's got a bit out the way,Ireland.Was leaving  it for future ref;so have a go at it.
