Death in the Roding - Can you help me find out more?

Henry John EARLE is my 3^rd Great Grandfather. Born 1852 in Barking and died 1889 in the Romford registration district.

I have discovered that his death was as a result of drowning in the Roding but I have no more information than this.

I assume an inquest would have resulted from his untimely death and there would have possibly been some local media coverage either from the incident or the inquest.

I have looked all over the internet to find anything relating to this but have hit a brick wall. Can anyone suggest where I should be looking to find details of the inquest or media coverage?

Hi Paul  the Roding comes from Dunmow near Chelmsford flows through a collection of villages called Roding and then flows down to Barking Creek,for the jast few miles it is known as Barking Creek,the fact that your man died in the Romford area which covers Barking could mean that he died not far from Barking,the whole area of obits or inquest reports in newspapers for Essex is complex but if there is one, it will be in the Romford Times not the one that was started in 1937 but the much older one,it is a very strange thing but you cannot view this newspaper in Essex it is not at the Central Library at Chelmsford or at Essex Records,the only complete collection of this paper is at the British Library Newspaper collection at Collingdale London,you have the advantage of knowing when he died I suggest you get the death cert it may have other info,that will help you narrow what copy a inquest would be in.

Hi Paul  the ERO have a very poor collection of newspapers,the Chelmsford Library has a great collection of Essex Chronicle which starts in the late 18th cent but this will not cover Barking,the reason I know about the Romford Times is that somebody else some time ago  wanted a article about the death of a relative and also knew it had been in the Times,this led to a search in which I tried to locate a copy ,the newspaper archive at Collingdale is the only place they are online and I think for about £7 will I believe send you a copy of article or maybe the entire paper,the other thing I found out when moaning to the librarian at Colchester Library that I thought it wrong that ERO ,Colchester and Chelmsford did not have copies of this paper ,he said it was possible they could get a copy from Collingdale I suspect itwould not cost to much doing that way,if I remember the paper was a weekly so if you have a death date it should point to one issue,another point about Barking is that it once had a large fishing fleet so deaths from drowning happened as the vast majority of people could not swim.

There is a burial register for Barking 1886-1894 online at SEAX - might be worth looking for his burial to see if the clergyman recorded any details.

I have looked through the register and can't find any mention of him in the year of his death and the following one.

It is possible that he didn't live in the area where he died.

I have now ordered the death cert. and will check his address to find the nearest church for burial.

Hi getting the death cert is the way tp go,the Romford area in the general records is a very large area ,the only way to maybe point to a church or place is to check the census the one before he died  and the one after to see if the family have moved,still the death cert is the best way to go.

Hi I got the name of the paper wrong it is the Essex Times not Romford  the person I helped some time ago just got in touch to say she had the article she wanted sent from Collingdale and was very pleased.
