Burial Location 1869 Cogan
« on: Wednesday 14 September 11 11:05 BST (UK) »
Can someone please look up a burial for Francis Cogan (or possibly Keoghan or similar spelling). The surname was spelt KEOGHAN but as his wife couldn't read & write the spelling was changed to COGAN - with a strong Irish accent it was spelt how it sounds, I suppose.

It is on Papers Past as Francis Cogan who drowned in Waikato River at Cambridge and found at Rangiriri 22 February 1869. The inquest was supposedly held at Rangiriri but no mention of where he is buried, he came from Cambridge. I haven't a copy of any inquest but family 'stories' have it.

My G.Grandfather.

The information I have so far -
•   Source NZSG Cemetery Fiche
Surname COGAN
Given maes N/R
Year of death 1869
Record No. N/R
Record Type Misc
Age N/R
Location Waikato Auckland U 20
(Location - this I understand relates to drownings)

•   COGAN Francis
Frank was 25 years old when he enrolled with the 3rd Waikato Militia on 17 November 1863 in Nelson. He was Private 784, born in Ireland and a labourer. He received his one acre section number 505 in Cambridge West and his 50 acre farm at Pukerimu. He is listed on the Aquitance Roll of 1868 held at National Archives in Wellington
His death is recorded in the Southern Cross newspaper as having drowned at Cambridge 20 February 1869.

I am wanting to know how I can get a copy of his death printout as I cannot find him on NZ BDM online also locate where he is buried. Hamilton & Cambridge are unable to help - possibly too far back for their records ?? I cannot find anything at Auckland Archives either.
Thank you.

There was a Thomas Keohan/Kerhean in Cambridge as well

The Cambridge musuem would no doubt know of burial practices at the time
sadly many early burials in NZ were not regulated until much later,

Just see they have a cemetery info page

Thank you althea - that was one combination of name I didn't think of. It would be great if NZ BDM had the wildcard option, would make our life easier for searching.

I've now ordered it, just hope it gives more information.

It may well prove incorrect but a possible
If you are using the burial locator, sometimes if you can't find things with soundex..just use START and enter a couple of letters, if you have a narrow time frame...thats how the KEEEHAN option came up
fingers crossed

Thanks Althea - I found it on Burial Locator as COGAN and that was why I couldn't find it on NZ BDM, spelt different again. But thanks to your initiative I am pretty sure you have lead me in the right direction.

 :'(
The museum notes talked about some burials have taken place at the riverside didn't they?
Its looking more likely that the spot was not a formal cemetery location

Yes and it also states no plan to burials before 1880.

"There is no obvious plan to the earlier burials. In July 1880 application was made by Rev J Golden to set aside a separate area for the Roman Catholics, and they were allocated 102 plots."

I hate brick walls  ???
