Midase,  We may be getting there but what do you mean by the  BIOS?  The date date in the tool bar is to days date and time ( taskbar)

I thought Helina had said the time and date were correct back on the first page of this topic?

I guess if her system date is defaulting to 2000 (ancient BIOS date) then she has a flat CMOS battery.

As downside has said, the CMOS battery is probably flat and needs replacing. This has the effect of throwing the BIOS clock out. We could guide you through the procedure but you might want to consider getting a computer shop to do it for you. Would only take a few minutes.

Now to get things straight in my mind.

To restart the up dates again I need a new battery. Will that correct the other problems eg security alerts to say my AVG needs up dating, and the invalid certificate, are they connected or 3 different problems.

I f I go to the computer shop what do I ask him to do.  He has already quoted £99 to upgrade including setting it  up, when I told him I could not afford it he said I could take the laptop in and he would give it a service for £30. 

If the computer has 3 different problems it might be worth paying the £30, but if only putting in a new battery is the answer I'll go to another shop.

Another thing I have found another way into these sites by preceeding. How secure is this and how long can I use the laptop.  What will eventually happen?

I hadn't realised that this was a laptop. Before committing to a computer shop, can you tell us what is the make and model of the laptop please.
