I've just been going through some of my documents and found an entry in Pigots Directory of 1822 for a Thomas Selway of 9, Holloway, Bath., a baker. I have a horrible feeling we've already found and discarded this one  :'(

Robson's directory of 1839 has 2 Selways - Harriet a milliner and R Selway a mason.

In the 1822, 1839 and 1842 directories, these are the only Selways in the whole of Somerset  ::) I would have thought that, if Thomas snr was really a farmer, he would have been listed. Sorry Dee  :'(

Red Post: I was wondering that, toni*  ;D

Just found I had another directory - Pigots 1830. There's a second Thomas Selway in there, also in Bath, but he's a commissioner for oaths... 34 Kingsmead St Bath. Unlikely I would think?

Added:

Having checked back again through the thread and realised that Harriet is significant, I thought I'd better list out the trades directories entries for her in more detail  ::)

Robson 1839 - Bath - Selway, Harriett milliner and straw hat maker - 18 Green Street
She also appears at that address under the 'Milliners and dressmakers' heading and also, (spelled Harriette) under 'Straw Hat Makers'.

Pigot's 1842 - Bath - Selway, Harriet & Eliza, milliners, 18 Green Street Interesting that they are also in the pages given to milliners, but they aren't listed under the Straw Hat Makers section.

Post Office 1852 - Bath - Selway, Misses H & E, dressmakers, 17 Broad St

Oh, I expect he was, Toni!   ;D

Angela, that's very annoying about the PRs.....bad enough when they're lost through lack of care, or water damage, but someone stealing them is so mean!   >:(   >:(

Thanks very much for the Directory records with addresses for Harriet SELWAY and Elizabeth. That's much appreciated. The two sisters are still together in 1861 at Orange Grove in the Abbey District. After that, I've lost track of both of them. I have found a couple of possibles for Harriet, but nothing for Elizabeth.

For those of you who helped on this thread and may like to know the latest....

There's a burial in Bath Abbey for a Thomas Selway aged 51 on 3rd Nov 1824. He's about the right age for Thomas snr but I'm not sure whether 'ordinary' people would be buried in Bath Abbey  ???

After all this time I have finally proved he is my ggg-grandfather!
I now have a Poor Relief Settlement Examination statement made by Hannah, his wife, on 17th November 1824 and in it she stated "That about 21 years since she was lawfully married by Publication of Banns in the Parish Church of Ston Easton in the County of aforesaid to THOMAS SELWAY who died about a fortnight since".

All that searching we did for missing children is explained in her statement too!
She said that "she has 4 Children living namely THOMAS aged 18, HARRIET aged 11, ELIZABETH aged 4 and FREDERICK aged 2 years".

So any other children must have died.
There was at least one other child, as there are now some PRs transcribed on Free Reg, and one of which is for the baptism of son Thomas in 1806 and another for a son named Frederic in 1809......in Ston Easton.  As my Frederick was born in 1823, the first son named Frederic must have died.

I also found the baptism of Thomas senior in Emborough in 1774 and his parents names were.....wait for it.....Thomas    ::)  and Ann. Emborough was also mentioned in Hannah's depostion .

Patience is a virtue.....that's for sure.      ;D
