what was Thomas jnr occupation in Australia ?

I'm not entirely sure.....but he tendered for work around the city of Adelaide, such as 'trenching the parklands, repairing the sheep yards, etc, and he rented out property. He also owned a large house at North Adelaide, and when he died, after Susan, he left 2000 pounds to the Bible Society.

His brother Frederick, my gg grandfather, was a builder.

Dee PM on it's way.

Thanks JW.......   ;)

Wife Elizabeth would need to have died, wouldn't she? Otherwise he deserted her.  ???

It might help if I could find his arrival in Australia.....but so far, I've not found it.   :-\

There's a burial in Bath Abbey for a Thomas Selway aged 51 on 3rd Nov 1824. He's about the right age for Thomas snr but I'm not sure whether 'ordinary' people would be buried in Bath Abbey  ???

Correction to make.....I thinkThomas was in South Australia by February, 1853, as I found the attached snippet. As his home that was sold when he died in 1884 was in Lefevre Terrace, and there's only three Selway families in South Australia way back then, I'm sure it is Thomas.

What do you think of these children I found on Familysearch ?

George Henry Selway s/o Thomas & Hannah bp. 08 March 1838 Welsh Newton Hereforedshire
(if this is your Hannah she would have been 57 if she was christened as a baby!)

John Selway aged 19 married Caroline Snook aged 17 at Weston Somerset on 27 July 1840 his father was Thomas her father was William – this looks promising.

Caroline Selway aged 1 was christened 12 May 1824 at the Holy Trinity Church in Frome the daughter of Thomas.

My Nan told me she was 1 of 13 children it turned out there was 7 but I agree there is a big gap between the first child you have found and the second, perhaps some of the babies were stillborn ?

What is the last appearance of Thomas senior ? is he given as deceased on Fredericks marriage ? who were the witnesses at Fredericks marriage are they relations ?

An Elizabeth Selway was married 31 May 1897 to Edward Colston Hamilton at Bedminster her father is given as Thomas although no ages are given. As thisis 1897 and your Elizabeth was born circa 1821 I am dubious as to whether this Elizabeth is yours, what else do you know about your Elizabeth?
On 27 March 1897 also at Bedminster a Thomas James Selway  was married  to a Lavinia Jane Selway widow  her father was William Croker. again he was the son of Thomas. I don’t think these do belong to you.

Just throwing a little bit more of a spanner in the works... have you discounted the Thomas Selway, farmer, living with Ann his wife in Clutton in the 1841? Ref HO107/ 938 Folio 6/29 page 2 ...
