Dee's Scavenger Hunt... September 13th .... Everyone welcome to participate
« on: Tuesday 13 September 11 10:11 BST (UK) »

Evening All

With the Boss still gallivanting around the place, once more it falls to one of us minions to do her job for her.... ;D ;D ;D

This Hunt will take you from Somerset to South Australia, so something for most everyone.

Good Luck Dee

Selways

Thomas SELWAY married Hannah CHURCHILL on 9th April 1804 in Ston Easton,
Somerset. They are my ggg-grandparents. I have absolutely no information
about Thomas’s parents. However, Hannah CHURCHILL was the daughter of
John CHURCHILL and Esther Parker CHAPPELL, and was baptised in the Cowl
Street Chapel of Shepton Mallet on 21st January 1781. I’ve found baptisms for her
older brother George and a younger sister Ann. I have the marriage for John and
Esther CHURCHILL. Hannah (CHURCHILL) SELWAY died aged 75 in 1856 in Bath
Abbey.

Oral history has it that Thomas and Hannah had thirteen children. However, I
have only been able to track down five of them…..with a big big gap between the
first child I have and the second one.
Thomas SELWAY born 1804/5
Harriet SELWAY born c 1816
Frances Sarah SELWAY baptised 2nd April 1820 St Michael, Bath. (Abode Borough
Walls)
Elizabeth SELWAY c 1821
Frederick SELWAY born 1823 (my gg-grandfather)

I have found the death of a possible child, Henry SELWAY, buried 29th March
1820 at St Michael’s, Bath, abode given as Borough Walls, but no parents given.

I can find no other mention of Thomas senior apart from on Frederick’s marriage
certificate, where he is said to be a farmer. However in 1829 his occupation on
the baptism of daughter Frances had him being an ostler.

In the 1841 Census Harriet, Elizabeth and Frederick are living together at St
Michael Bath.
HO 107/969/5 Folio 12 Pages 15 & 16
Hannah SELWAY is a nurse at Bath General Hospital.
HO 107/969/9 Folio 31 Page 5 (I think)

In 1851 mother Hannah is with the two daughters Elizabeth and Harriet.
GG-grandfather Frederick, wife Sarah and baby daughter Emily had sailed for
South Australia in 1849.
Thomas SELWAY junior was in South Australia by 1854, but I haven’t found
his arrival as yet. I do have his death as well as wife Susan’s, and lots of other
information about him.

What I’d like to know…….
Anything at all about Thomas SELWAY senior…..death, census, parents?

Any more of the children born to Thomas and Hannah, and what happened to
them?
I have a number of confusing snippets of information that may make sense if I
can trace more of the children.

Any trace of Thomas Junior in 1841 or 1851? In South Australia he had a wife
Susan, but I’ve not found a marriage for them anywhere.

Do Thomas & Susan have any children with them when they are in Australia?
How old is Susan from the Australian records?
When a death cert is issued in Australia am I right in thinking parents names are given? Do you know Susan’s parents ?
Trying to establish whether they married here in the UK prior to going to Australia.

Jaywit does he have a wife Susan ?

Do Thomas & Susan have any children with them when they are in Australia?

No.

How old is Susan from the Australian records?

Age at death in South Australia in 1883 was given as 67.......meaning born c 1816

When a death cert is issued in Australia am I right in thinking parents names are given? Do you know Susan’s parents ?

Yes...you are right for the other states of Australia.......wonderful detail on certificates......but South Australian certificates are pretty much mirror images of English! So I know absolutely nothing about Susan.
:(

Trying to establish whether they married here in the UK prior to going to Australia.

No marriage for them in South Australian records.......
